Apple iPhone and iPad get iOS 17.1 along with new features and burn-in improvements for iPhone 15 Pro
Apple has just released iOS 17.1 and iPadOS 17.1 for the iPhone and iPad. The update can now be downloaded and installed in the system settings under General --> Software Update. The approximately 1.35 GB download is available for all iPhones from the iPhone Xs to the iPhone 15 and for tablets from the iPad 6, the iPad Mini 5, the iPad Air 3, the 10.5-inch iPad Pro or the 12.9-inch iPad Pro of the second generation.
iOS 17.1 and iPadOS 17.1 introduce a number of features previously announced with the release of iOS 17. Most notably, this includes AirDrop - if the sending device leaves the range of the recipient while an AirDrop transfer is in progress, the file transfer automatically continues via the internet. Standby mode now lets users set when the display turns off, although this feature is only available on iPhones with an always-on display, i.e. the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
Apple's Music app gets quite a few upgrades, starting with a revamped Favorites section that now includes tracks, albums and playlists. The cover of a playlist can now be customized. Suggestions now appear at the end of playlists recommending music for the playlist. With iOS 17.1, the iPad receives support for the brand new Apple Pencil with USB-C.
Those wanting to have random photos displayed on the lock screen can now choose their preferred album in iOS 17.1. The iPhone now officially supports front doors with a Matter lock. Lastly, Apple has fixed some bugs, including an issue where a caller's name would not be displayed. Accident detection on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 series should now work more reliably, the burn-in problems of the iPhone 15 Pro are reportedly fixed, and the on-screen keyboard is now said to respond more quickly.
