Apple Vision Pro: Initial availability supposedly limited to 400,000 units
At this point, it has become abundantly clear that the Apple Vision Pro is a novelty product earmarked only for hardcore Apple enthusiasts. It still does not have an exact release date, and availability is restricted to the United States. A new report says only 400,000 units will be up for grabs initially, which should be enough to satiate immediate needs.
Industry insiders have supposedly told Jiemian News about the initial Apple Vision Pro availability. Getting your hands on one in 2024 will still be difficult, as only 1 million units will be up for grabs that year. However, it doesn't specify if they are for global markets or just the United States. It is probably the latter as Apple has yet to announce a global launch date, not even a tentative one, for the Vision Pro. Apple plans to manufacture 10 million units in 2025, indicating it could hit shelves worldwide sometime that year. Regular users would do well to sit this one out.
As a first-gen product, the Apple Vision Pro will have a lot of teething issues. That, plus a lack of developer interest, could result in a sub-par experience that might not justify its astronomically high US$3,500 price tag. Nevertheless, Apple has so much confidence in the Vision Pro that it is already working on a successor and even two low-cost alternatives.
The report also adds that it costs Apple US$1,700 to manufacture one Vision Pro headset. 60% of the components are of Chinese origin. In an ideal world, Apple would sell them at cost to attract more users towards its AR/VR/XR ecosystem, which, at this point, is practically nonexistent.
