A rather unfortunate discovery has been made in relation to one of Anbernic's current gaming handhelds. For context, the company has not announced any new gaming handhelds since releasing the RG477V in December (curr. $269.99 on Amazon). Instead, it is preparing a return to the wireless controller market with the RG G01.
At the same time, Retro Handhelds and others have observed Anbernic silently cutting the capabilities of the RG34XX SP. Released in May 2025, the RG34XX SP appeared to be Anbernic's attempt to combat the Powkiddy V90S and the Miyoo Flip. As a result, the RG34XX SP departed from the popular RG35XX SP by adding two joysticks.
Also, Anbernic doubled the device's RAM to 2 GB, which has seemingly proven useful when emulating some 3D games and playing PortMaster games. Unfortunately, that RAM upgrade has disappeared, with Anbernic's website now reflecting 1 GB of RAM for the RG34XX SP instead. The company has not offered a public explanation either, with the change having been made around January 21.
Instead, it has instructed its support team to confirm this change when prompted. Thus, purchasing a used RG34XX SP or a new unit from a third party with stock of 2 GB RAM models may be the wiser choice for now. Please see our RG34XX SP launch article for more details about Anbernic's second clamshell gaming handheld.
