Acer has revealed the EP130K - a 60 Hz ePaper external display with support for touch input and an impressive resolution of 3200 x 2400 in black and white mode. The display can also output colors, albeit at a lower resolution.

Alongside a bunch of other goodies, popular consumer electronics brand Acer has also announced the EP130K, which happens to be an ePaper portable monitor.

The EP130K portable monitor features a 3.3-inch matte touch-screen display with a resolution of 3200 x 2400 pixels. This allows for an incredibly high pixel density of roughly 308 PPI, which should be excellent for productivity-based workloads, such as those with lots of text and smaller elements.

Crucially, a refresh rate of up to 60 Hz has been claimed. This, unsurprisingly, should be able to help a lot with motion clarity.

However, there is a catch: the EP130K can achieve its resolution of 3200 x 2400 only in black and white mode. When switching over to color, the panel's resolution peaks out at 1600 x 1200 pixels. According to Acer, the panel can display 4,096 colors.

The Acer EP130K ePaper portable monitor features a 13.3-inch 60 Hz display with a peak resolution of 3200 by 2400.

Thanks to not having a backlight, the EP130K should be much more efficient than traditional backlit displays - that is, when displaying static content. The EP130's 60 Hz refresh rate should have a slightly adverse effect on power consumption, but that remains to be seen.

Moreover, interested folks should also note that ePaper displays are very difficult to use in environments with poor lighting, also due to them lacking a backlight. On the flip side of things, using an ePaper display in the sun or in brightly lit environments should be a genuinely delightful experience.

I/O options include a single mini HDMI port and dual USB Type-C ports.

Pricing details are yet to be revealed, although we do know that the ePaper Monitor will arrive in the first quarter of 2027. That said, given the features on offer, the product is unlikely to be cheap. For instance, the Bigme B13 ePaper portable display with a worse 30 Hz refresh rate costs a whopping $729 on Amazon.
