Acer Project DualPlay Mini turns an 8-inch gaming handheld into a tiny laptop

Acer has unveiled Project DualPlay Mini at IFA 2026, an unusual 8-inch concept device that combines a gaming handheld with a tiny laptop. Now, the idea isn’t exactly new. OEMs like Ayaneo, Onexplayer and GPD have already dabbled with the idea of a handheld-laptop hybrid, but Acer’s approach is unlike anything on the market. Project DualPlay Mini can also connect to an external display and handle productivity workloads, though getting serious work done on that tiny keyboard will be a chore.

The device uses a flip-and-swivel design that lets the display and controls transition between two modes. In handheld mode, Project DualPlay Mini is intended to work like a conventional portable gaming system, while flipping the device into laptop mode exposes a backlit physical keyboard. The handheld controls are meant for slower games that don’t require precision inputs, while the keyboard is designed for FPS and MOBA titles that require frame-perfect inputs.

Unfortunately, Acer has not provided detailed specifications for Project DualPlay Mini, but it has confirmed that it runs on an Intel processor. The chances of it being an Intel Arc G3 series SKU are high, but you can’t rule out a regular Panther Lake chip powering the handheld-laptop hybrid. A dual-fan system handles cooling, consisting of one Predator AeroBlade metal fan and a second conventional plastic fan. Project DualPlay Mini also celebrates Acer's 50th anniversary. At the back, the phrase "Acer 50 since 1976" is encoded in Morse code. Since it was announced as a proof of concept, the device has no release date.
