Acer unveils repairable Panther Lake laptop with 3K OLED display and upgradeable CPU

Acer has unveiled an interesting new laptop at IFA 2026. At first glance, the Vero 16 looks like a bog-standard 16-inch laptop with Intel Panther Lake, but it includes features heretofore found only on one repairability-focused laptop OEM. Acer says the Vero 16 has been designed to support processor upgrades for at least two generations. Exactly how this works is uncertain. Laptop processors are usually soldered to mainboards, making DIY upgrades rather cumbersome. In all likelihood, Acer may have torn a page from Framework’s handbook and enabled upgradability via user-swappable mainboards that may be sold separately.

The Acer Vero 16 also uses a tool-free opening mechanism on the underside that lets users access internal components without a screwdriver. Both the battery and SSD are user-replaceable, and the chassis is designed to be opened and serviced. Other parts, such as the covers surrounding the side-mounted ports, can also be removed individually. This means users don't have to replace or disassemble larger sections of the chassis if one area is damaged. The external hinge can also be detached from the main body.

Despite its repair-focused design, the Vero 16 packs potent hardware. Configurations range up to the Intel Core Ultra X9 388H, with other options including the Core Ultra X7 358H, Core Ultra 9 386H, Core Ultra 7 355, Core Ultra 5 325 and Core Ultra 5 322. Depending on the processor, graphics are handled by either Intel Arc B390 (Core Ultra X processors) or Intel Graphics (everything else).

Acer claims up to 180 TOPS of total platform AI performance. The notebook can also be configured with up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X memory and a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD with up to 512 GB of storage. There’s no word about an additional SSD slot, but the on-device SSD should be easily upgradable. The choice of LPDDR5X memory is interesting because it makes DIY RAM upgrades nigh-impossible. Any memory upgrades will require swapping the entire mainboard.

Display options on the Acer Vero 16 include a 16-inch 2,880 x 1,800 OLED panel running at 120 Hz, with 100% DCI-P3 coverage, 400-nit brightness and DisplayHDR True Black 500 support. For those who want fewer pixels, Acer offers a 1,920 x 1,200 OLED variant in two configurations: one with a peak brightness of 300 nits, a 60 Hz refresh rate, and 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage, and the other with a peak brightness of 250 nits, a 60 Hz refresh rate, and 95% DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage.

The Vero 16 packs a 71 Wh battery and features two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB Type-A ports, HDMI 2.1, an SD card reader and a 3.5 mm audio jack. Wireless connectivity options include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.6. Other hardware includes a 5 MP IR webcam with a physical privacy shutter, a backlit keyboard and two speakers with DTS Virtual:X tuning.

Acer says the Vero 16 will hit shelves in December 2026. Pricing has not yet been announced, and specifications may vary by market.
