GTA 6 performance concerns gamers who expected visuals above 30 fps. Still, leaks from earlier builds contain evidence of fidelity and performance modes. Gamers may not see 40-60 fps on the release date, but the PS5 Pro remains the best hope for these frame rates.

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson hinted that Xbox and PS5 release date versions would target 30 fps. However, a pair of GTA 6 leaks suggest the company may have had loftier goals. Development builds reference fidelity and performance modes, with the latter potentially offering higher frame rates.

Clues from older code

On social media, Frizky analyzed images from two already discussed reports. The first is the 2026 808mafia revelation, showing graphical debugging data on an Xbox console. Although the text is extremely poor quality, it lists fidelity mode and a resolution of 1440p-2160p.

The second image originates from the GTA 6 leak allegedly supplied by Aaron Garbut’s son in 2023. Garbut is a Rockstar development lead, but the gameplay clip was never confirmed to come from a relative. Regardless, Frizky thinks it indicates an earlier build included a performance mode. The preset would likely provide more than the 30 fps currently anticipated.

Unfortunately, the studio may not have been able to optimize the graphics to reach 40 or 60 fps. Digital Foundry analyzed the Netflix Extended Look and other trailers captured on the base PS5 system. The site believes the visuals render at 30 fps at native 1440p before being upscaled to 4K.

Even if Rockstar chose a fidelity mode to display Vice City in its full glory, the dense scenery taxes current-gen consoles. The CPU-heavy NPC behavior and ray-traced lighting may also be too demanding for a smoother graphical preset.

PS5 Pro advantages

Boosted by PSSR upscaling, the PS5 Pro is the best chance to see improvements until a PC port arrives. That said, its main advantage is a more powerful GPU, and the hardware could still struggle with Leonida’s complexity. Frustratingly, options for these gamers on the GTA 6 release date remain unclear.

Since the media reportedly has review codes, leaks threaten to reveal whether 40-60 fps is realistic on any Xbox or PS5 console. Even so, persistent watermarking aims to prevent proof of GTA 6 performance details from surfacing.
