Acer TravelMate P4 TMP416-51 Review: Lightweight office laptop with endurance and power
Acer consolidates all its in-house business laptops within the TravelMate series. The model at hand — a mid-range office notebook — is powered by an Intel Core i5-1240P-CPU and features a 16-inch display in 16:10 format. The competition includes devices like the Lenovo ThinkPad T16 G1 and the HP EliteBook 865 G9.

Case and features: The TravelMate P4 offers Thunderbolt 4
The aluminum-magnesium alloy case comes in a matte, dark blue (slate blue) finish. The chassis does not show any manufacturing flaws. The base unit and lid can be twisted a bit, but the flex is still completely within limits. The lid opens to a maximum angle of 180°. The innards are accessible after removing the base unit.
The laptop comes with two USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports and two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C slots. The Thunderbolt 4 ports support Power Delivery and can output a DisplayPort signal. Thus, together with the HDMI slot, the laptop offers up to three video outputs. A moderately fast microSD memory card reader is on board, rarely seen is its placement on the front. The 0.9 MP 720p webcam comes with a mechanical shutter.
The WLAN transfer rates determined under optimal conditions, such as no other WLAN devices in the near vicinity and short distance between the TravelMate P4 and server PC, turn out excellent. Wired network connections are handled by a Realtek RTL8168/8111 Gigabit Ethernet chip.

Input devices: The TravelMate P4 offers key illumination
The even, smooth keys of the illuminated chiclet keyboard have a short stroke and a clear pressure point. The keyboard hardly yields during typing. The two-stage key illumination is controlled via a function key. All in all, Acer delivers a keyboard suitable for everyday use.
A multi-touch capable clickpad (approx. 15.2 x 9.2 cm) serves as a mouse replacement, whose smooth surface makes it easy for the fingers to glide. The pad responds to inputs in the corners, offers a short stroke and a clear pressure point.
Display: TravelMate P4 only offers a mediocre panel
The 16-inch 1,920 x 1,200 IPS display in a work-friendly 16:10 format scores with a matte surface and the absence of PWM flickering. Brightness and contrast fall short of the respective targets (> 300 cd/m² and 1,000:1, respectively) — clearly, a €1,200 laptop can offer more here. The screens of the competition can clearly stand out.

The screen displays the colors quite well in the state of delivery: However, the DeltaE < 3 target is missed with a deviation of about 4.9. A calibration ensures a more even representation of the grayscale.
The panel cannot satisfactorily cover the AdobeRGB (40%), sRGB (58%) and Display P3 (39%) color spaces. Thus, it is not made for application scenarios that rely on color fidelity. The screens of the rivals are better positioned here.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17903 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
The IPS panel offers good viewing angle stability and can be read from any position. Outdoor reading of the screen is possible when the sun does not shine too brightly.
Performance: Alder Lake makes good steam
The TravelMate P4 series uses Intel Alder Lake CPUs, which provide enough performance for Internet and office applications as well as for modest games. The P4 models available at the time of testing are priced between €1200 and €1500. Our test model is currently the cheapest one.
Test conditions
It is possible to switch between the three manufacturer-specific performance profiles (see table) via the key combination "Fn" + "F". The profiles "Performance Mode", for benchmarks, and "Silent Mode", for the battery test, were used.
Power Mode | Normal Mode | Silent Mode | |
---|---|---|---|
Power Limit 1 | 35 W | 28 W | 28 W |
Power Limit 2 | 64 W | 64 W | 64 W |
Processor
The Core i5-1240P-Processor (Alder Lake) consists of four performance cores with hyperthreading and clocks from 1.7 to 4.4 GHz, and eight efficiency cores without hyperthreading operating from 1.2 to 3.3 GHz. In total, this results in 16 logical CPU cores.
The CPU tests of the Cinebench R15 benchmark are run with medium-high to high (multi-thread) or high to maximum (single-thread) clock rates in mains operation. In battery mode, the clock rates are significantly lower.
The CB15 loop test shows the turbo clocks dropping to a medium level from the second run.

Mass storage
The PCIe Gen4 M.2-2280 NVMe SSD from Micron offers a storage capacity of 512 GB and delivers good transfer rates. However, the performance drops later in the DiskSpd loop probably due to thermal throttling. The notebook does not have room for additional storage media.

Graphics card
Intel's UHD Graphics Xe G7 iGPU can work permanently at full power (1,300 MHz), going by what we see in The Witcher 3 test.
The iGPU can smoothly run many frugal games at low settings, but the P416 is not a gaming notebook. Both the benchmark results and the frame rates are clearly above the GPU's average so far.

Emissions and energy: Acer TravelMate P4 offers good endurance
Noise emissions
The TravelMate P4 often does not make a sound in everyday use that involves office and internet tasks. It can get loud under medium to high loads such as during the stress test and The Witcher 3.
Sound pressure levels of up to 43.9 dB(A) are possible, which is on the higher side for an office laptop. The competition fares better in this regard. The "Silent mode" ensures a lower noise level, but at the expense of computing power.

Temperature
The laptop only heats up to a small extent overall. A maximum temperature of 44.4 °C is reached during the stress test at one of the hotspots. Otherwise, the values are within the green zone in everyday use.
The continuous Prime95 and FurMark stress test is an extreme scenario for testing the system stability under full load. The CPU (P-core: 3.5 GHz, E-core: 3 GHz) and the GPU (1,300 MHz) start the test with high clock rates, but these drop during the course of the stress test.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 38.6 °C / 101 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 44.4 °C / 112 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 26.2 °C / 79 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 29.8 °C / 85.6 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.7 °C / 81.9 F (-2.1 °C / -3.7 F).

Energy consumption
The laptop does not show any abnormalities in terms of energy consumption, and the rates are on expected lines for the hardware installed here. The power consumption drops during the stress test because the CPU and GPU are slowed down. The included 65 W USB-C power supply is adequate to power the device under stress.

Battery life
The Acer TravelMate P4 achieves a runtime of 9:22 hours in the WLAN test, which is representative of the load when calling up websites via a script. It is a good but not a grandiose value.
The ThinkPad T16 G1 lasts a good hour longer with a slightly lower battery capacity thanks to a frugal AMD APU. The EliteBook can clearly set itself apart since it has a large-capacity battery on board in addition to a frugal AMD APU.
Pros
Cons
Verdict: Light business laptop with a large screen
Office and internet applications are handled by the installed combination of a Core i5-1240P and 16 GB RAM (dual-channel), which also works decently for modest games. The CPU absorbs short load peaks with a lot of computing power but has to slow down during long-term load — it is not possible to get sustained maximum performance under load.
Acer delivers a well-equipped, inconspicuous business companion with the TravelMate P4.
Heat and noise development are acceptable, but the fan could have been quieter under full load. Mobility is a given thanks to the fairly low weight (approx. 1.6 kg), the compact case, and a WLAN runtime of approx. 9.5 hours. Two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports are used to power the TravelMate P4 and enable easy integration into existing workstation setups.
The large 16-inch 16:10 1,920 x 1,200 IPS screen is the weak point of the notebook. Brightness, contrast, and color gamut coverage of the matte panel are too low — a laptop at this price level has to deliver more.
Alternatives to the Acer TravelMate P4 include the HP EliteBook 865 G9 as well as the AMD version of the Lenovo ThinkPad T16 G1. Both computers have brighter, higher-contrast, and more colorful screens and achieve longer runtimes than the TravelMate. The EliteBook additionally scores with an LTE modem.
