I've used a few ZTE devices over the last few years and I've come to respect what ZTE is capable of and the price at which they pull it off. While some of the earlier ZTE devices I looked at were aimed squarely at the budget market, the Axon steps up a notch and enters the market at the crowded mainstream. It's pretty easy to mistake the ZTE Axon for a flagship device.

At around £300 it doesn’t blow the likes of the OnePlus 2 out of the water or anything quite so dramatic, but we’d go so far as to recommend it over the similarly priced HTC One M9 or as a cheaper alternative to the likes of the Xperia Z3+. Nicely done ZTE, can’t wait to see what you’re cooking up next.

The $449 Axon Pro has some standout features, but ultimately, it left me unexcited. It offers a sumptuous display, outstanding audio and a camera that lets you have a lot of fun with focus. However, a polarizing design, short battery life and some software annoyances hold it back. I also want better picture quality, especially given the dual-lens setup.

ZTE surely took its time to enter the high-end smartphone market in the United States, but the Axon Pro proves that the wait has been well worth it. The newcomer presents a convincing package of well thought-out looks, superb build quality, high-end specs, and yet to be matched after sales support. The design of the smartphone impressed us with attention to detail that's not to be expected in the price range the Axon Pro inhabits. The same goes for the quality of the device's overall fit and finish.

I've got to hand it to ZTE: The Axon is the sort of powerful, budget-friendly phone I never thought the company would, or could, make. It's got gobs of power. It's mostly well-built. The camera isn't half-bad. And that tantalizing $450 price tag currently represents the floor -- the least amount of money you could spend on a phone as well-specced as this.

So, is it worth it to pick up the ZTE Axon Pro over some of the aforementioned devices? Naturally, that’s tough because there are still opportunities to advance its performance in the areas of its camera and battery life. If you’re looking for the savings in a high-end, flagship phone, you’ll certainly get it here with the Axon Pro – whereas devices like the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6 will still cost you at least $650. This is just the beginning, as the Axon Pro is meant to be the bridge device in getting ZTE’s name into the minds of consumers. So far, it strikes a nerve that’s deeply electrical. Let’s just hope they can use the momentum to their advantage.

Flagship with some issues. The ZTE Axon Elite is the current flagship device from the Chinese manufacturer in the European market. During the time with the ZTE Axon Elite, I have been part impressed with ZTE and part frustrated. For the most part, everything feels thought out and well-put together. The ability to tweak and change the wallpapers and themes was a lot more fun than it really should be. Yet, trying to set it up to the way I liked it felt like a chore, not a pleasure. The ringtone is nice and loud, but it’s louder than I want for longer than I want. It’s nice to hold in the hand, but in use it kept feeling that little bit slippery when I was trying to work one-handed.

ZTE Axon Mini Premium
The ZTE Axon Mini Premium is a mid-range smartphone with premium experience. It is an affordable model and the pared-down version of the ZTE's flagship phone Axon. Although its back is made of plastic, it is made from the "Boeing 787 aircraft-grade aluminium-titanium alloy". This heavy duty material gives the smartphone a premium look with an excellent feel. The Android 5.1 Lollipop device does not go overboard with pre-installed applications. It features a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 octa core processor, 3 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of internal storage. It is suitable for multitasking and the storage capacity can be expanded by up to 128 GB with a microSD card. The capacitive touchscreen uses AMOLED technolgy and features Full HD resolution and a pixel density of 442 PPI. It is a great display, which is crisp and gorgeous to look at. Although its 13 MP camera does not take the most detailed pictures, it delivers superb colors and good clarity even in low-light conditions. This smartphone brings extra value with high-end audio, a fingerprint reader, eye recognition, and a pressure-sensitive display, which, however, is not as comprehensive and sensitive as the Apple's 3D touch. The ZTE Axon Mini Premium is available in Gold, Chromium Silver or Rose Gold, but not in pure black. It has a weight of 140 g and a 2800 mAh battery, which is above average and able to handle a full day's usage with around 4 hours of screen-on time.Specifications

Pressure sensitive. ZTE's Axon Mini Premium Edition has a total of three methods for unlocking the screen: Force Touch, fingerprint reader and iris scanner - and that in the upper mid-range! The configuration is impressive and everyday performance is good. However, it has some shortcomings.

At just under £230, the ZTE Axon Mini is for the most part a handset worth considering. The UI needs a lot of work and the phone as a whole could have been refined a little more before hitting the market, but it boasts respectable performance, a nice screen, a surprisingly good camera and a solid feature set for the price.

I wouldn’t recommend the Axon Mini over other mid-range options. It’s got a good screen, is a quick device when it works, and has some nice extra features, such as the pressure-sensitive touch screen. But having experienced performance issues and finding myself still confused by the phone's downright strange design, I can’t really say it’s worth going with ZTE over better-known brands. I can’t think of why you would choose the Axon Mini over say the OnePlus X. ZTE’s device is slightly more expensive than the OnePlus, and if my experience is anything to go by, sometimes it won’t even work.

If you’ve felt that we’ve been too critical of the smartphone thus far – it is this price point that caused us to be. Well, that and the fact that we really liked the vanilla Android-toting Axon Pro. The Mini packs a lot of tech, impressive on paper but not so much in real life. Force Touch – great, but unresponsive and unnatural-feeling; fingerprint scanner – awesome, but not quick or reliable; iris scanner and voice unlock – clunky and impractical; 13 MP camera sounds great, but performs worse than some cheaper handsets we’ve reviewed. It feels more like a tech fan’s toy than an actual, fleshed out upper-midrange smartphone.

Overall the Axon Mini is an interesting device, ZTE has added quite a bit of extra value with the pressure-sensitive display, the fingerprint reader and the high-end audio. The 3GB of RAM is also good to see, as is 32GB of storage. The main thing I feel that lets down the phone is the processor, it isn’t a deal breaker, but having a better processor would seem more appropriate alongside all those extra features.

ZTE Axon 7
At first glance, it is hard to pull off the Axon 7 as a budget phone. It is a solid-looking and well-built phone, which ZTE claimed was designed in collaboration with Designworks, a subsidiary of the BMW group. It is equipped with a 5.5-inch WQHD AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. With its dual LTE capacity, the Axon 7 automatically suggests the best SIM based on the user’s calling patterns. The device runs on Android 6.01 Marshmallow and its performance is powered by Snapdragon 820 2.15 GHz processor. The internal storage of the ZTE Axon 7 has the capacity of 64 GB with 4 GB RAM or 128 GB with 6 GB RAM and it comes with a MicroSD expansion slot. which supports up to 256 GB. With a 20 MP rear camera with an aperture of 1.8 combined and a 8 MP front camera with aperture of 2.2, its capacity of delivering crystal-clear photos with multiple functions and modes is unquestionable. Ample connectivity is supported by WiFi, A-GPS and Bluetooth. A fingerprint sensor allows users to customize gestures for unlocking purposes and ID recognition. One key highlight of the Axon 7 is, the high audio quality thanks to HiFi audio. All things considered, its affordability makes the Axon 7 a highly desirable phone. The difference to the ZTE Axon 7 Mini for example is a 0.3 inch bigger display with 2560x1440p instead 1920x1080p resolution, somewhat better camera, cpu, gpu and double memory.Specifications

ZTE have done a half decent job with the Nougat software. Very few manufacturers leave the Google software alone these days and ZTE’s take on Nougat isn’t as bad as many others’. While it’s not perfect it is certainly not a poor experience, once a decent keyboard and launcher was installed.

Top specs go hand in hand with top price and this is quite normal. The Axon 7 does stumble a bit when it comes to low-light shots, and its loud speakers don't always offer the best bass. The OnePlus 3 and Alcatel Idol 4s are both worthy alternatives — the former for its whopping 6GB of RAM, the latter for its bundled-in VR headset — and both offer better battery life. The OnePlus 3 is still our favorite sub-$400 phone out there, but the Axon 7 is an extremely close second.

But other than superficial aspects, I have no real complaints with this phone. Regular readers know I place a lot of emphasis on value in my reviews (I'm not going to judge a $400 phone the same way I do a $850 phone, and I think phones that cost north of $700 should be scrutinized. That's why I thought the HTC 10 was a pile of "meh"), so whatever minor nitpick I have, such as a less-than-stellar low light camera performance or silly gesture shortcuts or no backlight for capacitive buttons that are too close together, I just tell myself "dude this phone is $400," and I don't think it's bad at all.

Yes. At $400, the Axon 7 is a no brainer. It packs a speedy processor, the best audio we’ve heard on a smartphone this year, a great display and camera, and software that’s unobtrusive. It may not sport dual cameras, bleeding-edge silicon, or an ungodly amount of memory, but to call the Axon 7 a slouch is to do it a disservice. Short of smartphones hundreds of dollars more, it’s one of the best on the market.

The ZTE Axon 7 is the company's knight in shining armor that's meant to take US shores by storm. We've got good news for you ZTE: you're on the right track with the Axon 7. However, success isn't guaranteed, and that's a bummer considering how great of a product you've put together.

The all-metal build that carries over to the front-facing speakers has caught more than a few eyes when using in public, and the screen of this phone is a thing of sheer beauty. I can confidently say these are the second best speakers I’ve ever heard on a smartphone and I’ll definitely miss having those. Playing Fallout Shelter and Monument Valley provided the best gaming I’ve experienced on a phone, and to the average user, every day usage is going to feel very fluid.

The ZTE Axon 7 is, all things considered, a fantastic device at a terrific price point. On paper, in many ways, it outstrips the OP3. But when it comes down to the essentials — processing, camera and design, in particular — it feels as if the line has yet to fully find its feet, while the OP3, now on its third attempt to kill flagships seems a more confident and stable offering.

The Axon 7 also sports a USB Type-C port, which is becoming increasingly common among Android phones in 2016. And while the company ships a Quick Charge 3.0 charger and Type-C cable in the box, it generously provides a micro-USB adapter for those who want to keep using those older, far more ubiquitous cables. It's one of many nice touches in a box that includes a very decent pair of headphones and the aforementioned clear TPU case.

I'm still not convinced that the ZTE Axon 7's $399 price tag isn't a typo. This smartphone performs like something that costs hundreds of dollars more, with a fast processor, a rich display and a stunning design that oozes care and quality. The phone's MiFavor interface adds some nice software touches without getting in the way, while its 20-megapixel camera takes gorgeous outdoor photos complete with plenty of tools for photography nuts.

The Axon 7 leads the way in terms of affordable flagships and aside from one drawback, delivers in every department. ZTE scores another first with an excellent smartphone that’s compatible with all major US networks. With the Axon 7, ZTE raises the bar substantially for premium, affordable flagships by delivering an excellent smartphone with very few compromises, even next to the very best.

ZTE Axon 7 Mini
The ZTE Axon 7 Mini is essentially a re-bundling of the much celebrated Axon 7 in a smaller package. At first glance, it is an impressive looking phone as it sports the Axon 7’s full metal unibody design. It is comfortable to the grip as the dimensions measure at 147.5 x 71 x 7.8 mm. Weighing only 153 grams, it is suitable for one-handed operation. Its aluminum body not only makes this phone highly durable but also highly appealing. On the display front, it features a 5.2-inch AMOLED Full-HD Display with a pixel density of 423 ppi. It is also shielded with Corning Gorilla Glass Gen 4 for additional durability. Its screen may be downsized; nevertheless, visuals and images appear remarkable and spectacular. Playing games and watching videos on this phone is pleasurable. Furthermore, it is paired with Dolby Atmos Digital surround sound and dual stereo speakers, which allow users to enjoy crystal clear HiFi audio. The Axon 7 Mini is powered by the highly favored Qualcomm Octa-Core Snapdragon 617 processor (Adreno™ 405 GPU). It is integrated with 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB internal storage and an SD memory slot, which makes expanded the storage capacity by up to 128 GB possible. This makes the Axon 7 Mini a powerful mid-range multi-tasker, which is capable of running memory intensive apps. Another key feature of this smartphone is its large, non-removable battery rated at 2705 mAh. It is capable of up to 15 hours talk time and on top of that, Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 enables time for full charge at a mere 90 minutes. That being said, it slightly disappointing to not see the latest Quick Charge 3.0 on a newer device like this. On the brighter side, it does come with the newer USB Type-C connector rather than a micro USB port. A fingerprint scanner can be found at the rear side of the smartphone beneath its camera to ensure security at every touchpoint. For optics, it is fitted with a 16 MP rear-facing camera and an 8 MP front facing snapper. Its primary lens is also optimized with an ISO-cell sensor and sapphire lens with F/1.9 aperture. This makes capturing pictures possible even under low light conditions. Overall, pictures captured by the camera are decent enough. Its front facing camera is equally impressive as it is enhanced with F/2.2 aperture with 88 degree wide angle lens. This is particularly useful for taking group selfies or even for larger scenery photos. ZTE ships the Axon 7 Mini in dual SIM mode. It comes preinstalled with Android 6.01 Marshmallow and is available in two colour variants i.e. gold and gray. Its low price factor will be a strong selling point as it is packed with fairly high specs for a compact smartphone. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

Is the Mini version all you need? In addition to the flagship model Axon 7, the Chinese manufacturer once again offers a Mini version of the current model. Besides the size and the features, the price was reduced as well. But can the Axon 7 Mini compete with the strong rivals?
Source: Laptop Media

ZTE is hardly able to compete with the bigger smartphone manufacturers but its Axon lineup can definitely be called quite successful. After the strong performance of Axon 7, it is now time to review Axon 7 mini, which is one step lower in the price range, but it can undoubtedly compete with the popular names in this class.

There's a lot to recommend the Axon 7 Mini if you're in the market for a phone that won't break the bank. This device retains the same great design as the flagship-challenging Axon 7, while making acceptable trade-offs in performance to keep the price low. The rear camera can turn out some pretty good-looking images, and watching videos on that vibrant screen with stereo sound is a pleasure.

Despite all that, the software just feels a bit too sluggish and hampered by its hardware specs, which is a shame when its bigger brother is such a big leap forward for not that much more of an investment. It’s a solid offering from ZTE, but it isn’t a standout. If you find it at a discount, then it becomes a more compelling option.

ZTE launched the Axon 7 Mini at $299, which is way too high for this phone to be competitive. Since launch, though, it’s fallen in price and has hovered around $199 pretty permanently, which definitely puts the phone in a place where you should seriously consider it.

Going by specs alone, the Axon 7 Mini should have been a hit. Decent power, an OLED screen and a metal build for under £300? Sounds great.

As for processing power, the smartphone stocks a 1.5GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, expandable by MicroSDXC up to 128GB. The device has been responsive and able to manage heavy processing loads well within my limited test period, though I’ve had an app crash.

If you have a hard budget of $300 or less, the Axon 7 Mini offers truly fantastic hardware, and chances are you’ll grow used to its performance. But if you have a bit of wiggle room, use it, and find a better value.

The ZTE Axon 7 Mini is an awkward mishmash of good and bad, adding up to a phone destined to be thought of as an also-ran even though it does have some great features.

The Axon 7 Mini falls short of being the platonic ideal of a “mini” phone, one that takes a flagship, features intact, and gives us a handset with a smaller screen. Instead, it practically turns that approach on its head, barely decreasing size at all, and instead bringing us a phone that might be better called the Axon 7 Lite, dialing back on processing power and bells and whistles.

While the ZTE Axon 7 Mini costs $100 less than its larger sibling and has the same premium build quality, it makes a number of compromises to reach its lower price point. Many of the things we love about the Axon 7, like its Quad HD display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, big battery, and dual-band Wi-Fi are all absent here. Rather than looking at it as a "mini" version of the Axon 7, you should instead look at the Axon 7 Mini as an entirely different phone. Ultimately, it's up against other midrange options like the Moto G4 and the Life One X2, both of which offer similar performance for $100 less. The G4 is a particularly compelling alternative since it has a cleaner UI and support for all major US carriers. If you're looking for a truly compact phone that doesn't compromise on its specs, the Google Pixel is your best option, but it costs twice as much. Most people will still get the best combination of price and performance by paying $100 more for the Axon 7, which remains our Editors' Choice.

I found the Axon 7 it to be good enough to compete with the OnePlus 3, and for some, even Samsung’s Galaxy S7, in spite of its $400 price tag. It makes sense, then, that ZTE would create a smaller version of the widely praised device, hitting the $300 price point in the process.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely a market for a $300 aesthetic twin of the Axon 7. But when you take into consideration how much you’re giving up for a $100 discount, it just doesn’t add up.

The Mini isn't going to rival the performance of flagship devices, but you won't find many of its best features on higher priced setups. It's a fully capable Android phone, with a bright AMOLED display, front-facing speakers with Hi-Fi audio and a microSD card slot that doubles as a second SIM card slot. Best of all, it's affordable and comes unlocked, meaning everyone is invited.

ZTE's progression to the high end is going nicely, with the Axon 7 looking to be its best effort yet. It's compact, well made and packing punch in all the right places. It's also sensibly priced, coming in under the OnePlus 3 and sitting just above the Moto G4 Plus. You get a lot for your money here, and that's always good.

There's a lot of competition in the midrange market right now, with choices ranging from the OnePlus 3 to the Huawei Honor 8$399.99 at Amazon to the Motorola Moto G4$149.99 at Amazon. If the Mini stands out, it'll stand out for build quality. It's a warm, gorgeous metal unibody design in jewel tones, at a level where most of its competitors are plastic. The smaller size actually helps play that up: since you can more easily wrap your hands around the Axon 7 Mini, you are more able to appreciate its warm metal and curved form.

In conclusion, the ZTE Axon 7 mini will probably push the Axon brand down to the ~$300 level, and it is a very good spot to aim at. At this price point, the obvious competition would be the Google Nexus 5, the Sony XPERIA Z3+ and HTC One M9 and all of those have very good user reviews. It looks like a good topic for research.

ZTE Axon 7 Max
The smartphone market is ever increasing and competition inevitably turns rife and stiff. Consumers ultimately benefit as manufacturers push to produce cheaper and better smartphones. The release of the ZTE Axon 7 Max marks the sequel to its highly successful Axon 7. At first glance, this smartphone bears the form of a well-made device. Notwithstanding its wide display, it maintains a slim profile. The back of the phone is metal built, which feels smooth and pleasant to the grip. The ZTE Axon 7 Max sports a 6-inch full-HD IPS display with a pixel density of 367 ppi. One of the key features in the Axon 7 Max is the introduction of 3D viewing capabilities with naked eyes (‘naked 3D’ display) on this device. This technology allows for the viewing of 3D content on the smartphone’s display without the need for polarized glasses. This will certainly appeal those who rely on smartphones for extensive video viewing. In terms of performance, the Axon 7 Max runs on an octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor with a whopping 4 GB RAM. This processor has recently been a popular choice among manufacturers for their mid range devices largely due to its energy efficiency. The expanded memory is essential for maximising performance in graphics intensive programs. The internal flash memory has a capacity of 64 GB. The storage capacity can be expanded by up to 200 GB with a microSD card. Users will definitely need this bloated storage to store contents with rich graphics. For the shutterbugs, the ZTE Axon 7 Max sports dual 13 MP cameras at the back with laser autofocus and a dual-LED flash module. The front-facing camera on the other hand is an 8 MP shooter for selfies. The cameras aren't particularly special in any way, but they do the job. A circular fingerprint scanner sits at the rear side of the smartphone. Connectivity on the ZTE Axon 7 Max includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, A-GPS, Glonass, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and a USB Type-C port. To pair its superior high graphics performance, this device is packed with dual Hi-Fi AK4962 audio chips for better audio output. It is integrated with some remarkable audio based features, including a real time voice translator, voice activated camera commands for multi-shot and timers, and a voice assistant. The Axon 7 Max runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat. Overall, the Axon 7 Max brings apparent improvements compared to its predecessor. One notable upgrade is the integration of the 3D viewing capabilities with naked eyes. Whether or not such improvements warrant an upgrade remains a moot point but it certainly adds some spice to the already dense industry. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

ZTE Axon M
The ZTE Axon M has two screens stacked on top of one another and folds open to form a 6.75-inch mini-tablet. It isn't a new concept. It apes the Kyocera Echo and Sony Tablet P, both of which also had two screens attached together with a hinge and were mediocre. Thankfully, technology has progressed in the five to six years since, and the Axon M is faster, smoother and has more capabilities. Its two screens come in handy with some day-to-day tasks and can be surprisingly useful in very specific instances, like multitaskers who want to use apps side-by-side or gamers itching for that Nintendo 3DS look and feel. Compared to the streamlined design found on many of today’s smartphones, even some affordable ones, the ZTE Axon M is bulky. When closed, the Axon M is an extra-thick 5.2-inch phone with all its buttons on the left edge and a hinge on the right. When a user wants to use the extra screen, they will have to fold the second display from behind, like opening a book with the binding toward a user and the pages facing downward. One of the control buttons on the side is a quick launch button. A user can double-click it to launch the camera. A long press lets the user assign the default app. Users can also have the "TV Mode" as default app. This automatically sets the phone to the expanded viewing option and opens a video-viewing app of their choice. From a technical standpoint, the ZTE Axon M is a small step up from the company’s last smartphone, the ZTE Axon 7. It has similar specs to the Google Pixel from 2016, complete with 4 GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 821 powering the experience. There’s only a single 20-megapixel camera on the Axon M. Hitting a button to switch between the front- and rear-facing camera on this phone actually flips the entire screen around to the other display. Photos are filled with detail and accurate color. Low-light performance is so-so, but it should be so much better with the camera’s f/1.8 aperture value. There appears to be no help on the software side of things to even out the lighting and color balance, as night-time photography does not look as well-lit. Even with heavy use of the two screens, the 3,180 mAh battery didn’t have any problems making it to the end of the day. The screens don’t hurt battery life that dramatically. The ZTE Axon M operates like 99% of all other Android smartphones. Promised to receive Android Oreo in the near future, for now, it’s loaded with Android Nougat 7.1.2. As such, a user will find stock features like split-window multitasking with ZTE’s own layer on top of it. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

Will that work? ZTE delivers the first "foldable" smartphone. While we would have imagined something else, the statement is right in principle. With its two displays and hinge in between, the Axon M reminds us a little of the old Nokia Communicator, but it can do so much more. What exactly that is, we gathered for you in our review.

ZTE doesn't launch a lot of phones in India, and we don't have confirmation about whether the Axon M will come here at all. If or when it does, we'll put it through all our usual tests and spend enough time with it to give you an idea of how it might work as your next primary device.

I respect ZTE for trying something different(but not new) as we have grown accustomed to a candy bar style of smartphone but right now that form factor is working. Especially with behemoth displays getting over 6” depending which phone you use. I think it has potential but I’d like to see maybe if ZTE can do it without the glaring fold in the middle, utilize more screen real estate and also not make the glass so glossy. The price tag isn’t going to garner much buyers too with its coming out to $724 and is exclusively under the AT&T brand.

The ZTE Axon M has a heavy and awkward design that's genuinely useful for gaming and multitasking. But if you're not down to go double, spend your money on either a top-tier phone, or a cheaper phone with the same specs as the Axon M.

When it comes down to it, this isn’t the worst effort ZTE could have made, although it is a bit half-baked, and the Axon M falls short in key areas. Unfortunately, software is the one of the most deficient areas of the M. Simply stretching and splitting content in accordance with the in-built functionalities of the Android OS leaves the user with a rather slapdash user experience. Games can’t take advantage of the large double screen in any real way, videos are rather unpleasant with the black bar in the middle, and transitions between screen modes are often dreadfully unresponsive.

It isn’t enough to just put another screen on an existing smartphone if it doesn’t first address its core experience – and that, in a nutshell, is the main problem with the ZTE Axon M. It gets us excited to see what comes next, but unless you’re actually looking for a dual screen phone, simply having this one won’t dramatically change your Android life.

We’ve seen a lot of interesting smartphones in 2017, but the Axon M stands out as the most unique device this year, and arguably in the past few years, too. There’s no doubt the Axon M is going to catch your attention, but do you think it offers enough? What do you think of ZTE’s latest attempt at being different? Do you need two screens? Are foldable displays the next big trend or nothing more than a clever gimmick like 3D cameras?

ZTE Axon 9 Pro
The ZTE Axon 9 Pro is the Chinese company’s newest flagship phone. It comes with many premium features and great performance hardware. The phone features a familiar glass sandwich design with a metal frame, but it feels lightweight in hand. The finish is a 2.5D hardened glass on the front and 3D tempered glass on the back, which makes it quite vulnerable to drops. The display of the ZTE Axon 9 Pro is a 6.21-inch OLED display. It has a 2,248 x 1,080 resolution, which is plenty sharp, as well as an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. Users can experience crisp picture quality, brilliant colours and strong contrasts with the Axon 9 Pro. ZTE's new graphics technology, HDR10, and Axon Vision™ make playing games, watching movies and pictures ultimate fun. The graphics performance is rounded off by an RGB sensor. It dynamically captures the ambient light and adjusts the colour temperature of the FHD+ AMOLED display. Thus, a user will always benefit from the perfect colour scheme no matter when and where. The independent display processing chip with MEMC technology (motion estimation, motion compensation) provides a silky, yet ultra-sharp video experience that can handle up to 500 megapixels per second. The image refresh rate of 24 or 30 frames is increased to 60 frames per second to reduce blur and create a great viewing experience. And thanks to the dual camera with 12 MP and 20 MP incl. 130° wide-angle, the pictures get an impressive effect.
The Axon 9 Pro knows no limits in terms of power. The smartphone is equipped with a powerful Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 845 processor for fast response and a smooth and fluid gaming experience. The storage is not expandable, but there is 128 GB of internal storage, which will satisfy most users. In addition, AI features improve the hardware and battery performance based on user’s behaviour patterns. Even when travelling, the Axon 9 Pro will not let users down: Real-time translations are easy with Smart Voice, and IP68 protection protects the smartphone from rain and other environmental factors. Other premium features worth mentioning include USB Type-C, a rear fingerprint scanner, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, stereo speakers, surround sound recording, and an RGB sensor for automatically adjusting the screen’s temperature. As for software, the Axon 9 Pro runs on almost stock Android, but it is Android 8.1 Oreo, not Android 9.0 Pie. A stock Android 9 phone would have been a more attractive prospect, but the lack of bloatware is appreciated. As a conclusion, while the ZTE Axon 9 Pro features many premium features and is well-built, it does not have a low price and faces strong competition from OnePlus, Moto and Asus.

In any case, the Axon 9 Pro is a true 2018 flagship, by every standard. Fully decked-out and complete with at least a couple of interesting features and extras. We doubt that it will dramatically shift ZTE's current market standing in any way. But, for a small group of just the right kind of Android power users, it really does seem like the phone to beat.

ZTE is having a hard year. Back in May, it was forced to “cease major operating activities” after the U.S. banned the company from buying U.S. goods (such as Qualcomm processors) due to the company violating sanctions against Iran. This ban was reversed after a month, under the condition that the company would have to pay a $1 billion fine to the U.S., with $400,000 extra left in escrow. This put a significant dent in the company’s operations, but ZTE is hoping for a comeback with a device it thinks will bring back the glory days.

ZTE pitches the Axon 10 Pro against modern flagships like the P30 Pro, especially in regard to design. The Chinese manufacturer has included an in-screen fingerprint scanner and 48 MP dual rear-facing cameras, but it has scrimped on many of the other flashy features adorning high-end handsets. Read on in this detailed review to find out how this 600-Euro (~US$678) supposed flagship killer performs in our tests.

The OnePlus 7T may be a more well-rounded phone for the money, but the Axon 10 Pro is a good alternative for those more concerned about battery life or storage capacity. If you're looking to spend less than the Axon 10 Pro's $549 price, look into the $399 Pixel 3a.

As you can see, this $550 smartphone can definitely go head to head with phones that cost nearly double. It probably won’t win every battle, but that’s perfectly fine. What’s most surprising about this phone is that it beats OnePlus at its own game, offering flagship-tier hardware and a clean software experience at a very appealing price, making the ZTE Axon 10 Pro the new king of the budget flagship smartphone segment, That’s definitely something I wasn’t expecting when this phone showed up.

Aside from some camera issues, the ZTE Axon 10 Pro doesn’t have many glaring weaknesses. You’re getting the same core specifications and features you would find on more expensive flagships, including the Snapdragon 855 and in-display fingerprint sensor. Also, there aren’t many phones that I can think of in this price range that offer both wireless charging and IP certification. It may not do too much to differentiate itself but not everyone cares about unique features or gimmicks. This is a phone that focuses on delivering a fast and reliable experience, and most of the features are practical. The ZTE Axon 10 Pro certainly nails those aspects and is a great bargain that shouldn’t be overlooked.

We may be in the age of the $999 flagship phone, but a few smartphone makers are still trying to put out premium devices that don't flirt with four-digit price tags. OnePlus and Asus have staked out their share of that market with the OnePlus 7 Pro and ZenFone 6, respectively, and now they're about to be joined by a familiar face that's been hard to find in the U.S. as of late.
