Xiaomi is attempting to become the standard-bearer of Android TV with Android Pie updates for several Mi TVs
TVs seem to be a lucrative sector for Xiaomi, with the company recently selling over 100,000 units in 9 minutes during the annual Chinese "618 Festival". Huawei, Honor and even OnePlus are now entering the TV market, and it appears that Xiaomi is positioning itself as the standard-bearer for Android TV-powered devices.
Today, it has emerged that Xiaomi plans to bring Android 9.0 Pie-based Android TV to the Mi TV 4 PRO, 4A PRO, 4C Pro and 4X Pro, with the initial rollout beginning in September. The news comes from Sudeep Sahu, Xiaomi's Mi TV Product Manager who is reported as having said:
...In other words, we’re trying to set a standard – like we’ve done in terms of pricing, offerings and even bringing Android TV to even lower sizes and prices – to make sure the latest updates roll out to customers as soon as possible.
We want to lead the path and show [other brands] how Android TV updates [are done.]
XDA Developers added the clarifications to Sahu's words, for reference. The website also claims that the 32-inch 4A PRO and 4C PRO should be among the first devices to receive Pie, with Xiaomi staggering the update from September with a wider release in the coming months. In short, these updates are the start of Xiaomi positioning itself as the foremost Android TV brand before other OEMs like OnePlus establish themselves.
