Prior to the Pura 80 launch event, rumors and hints circulated about the SC5A0CS SmartSens sensor that was expected to be utilized in the Pura 80 Ultra. At the time, it wasn't entirely clear if SmartSens was one of Huawei’s new marketing terms. As it turns out, it’s the name of a company based in Shanghai, whose camera sensor technology is featured in the Pura 80 series for the first time and replaced the usual Sony and Samsung sensors.
Therefore, at least some of the hardware in the Pura 80’s camera system are therefore not from Huawei itself but from another Chinese manufacturer. This is relevant because new rumors now suggest that another well-known Android smartphone brand, namely Xiaomi, could start using SmartSens components as well. This leak comes from the Indian leaker, who recently posted the unconfirmed tidbit on the social media platform X.
Replacing Sony with SmartSens
Xiaomi has always been flexible when it comes to camera sensors. In addition to Sony sensors, such as the 1-inch LYT-900 found in the Xiaomi 15 Ultra (available via import at Aliexpress), it also utilizes the 200-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL HP9 and Omnivision components in several of its devices. It is therefore quite plausible that SmartSens might soon become another supplier for Xiaomi’s upcoming Leica camera flagship phones.
Specifically, a SmartSens sensor is reportedly going to be featured in the Xiaomi 16 Ultra, even though the exact model is unknown at this point. Xiaomi could possibly opt for the same 1-inch sensor used in the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra as a replacement for the older Sony LYT-900. Whether this will actually happen remains to be seen. In any case, this should be a quite exciting rumor for Xiaomi fans.
