Xiaomi 12 Ultra: Leica camera partnership and July launch announced for Xiaomi's upcoming flagship
Xiaomi has finally announced its official partnership with Leica. In a video released hours ago, the company explained its collaboration with the German camera juggernauts on a smartphone that's set to make its debut in July. The video never explicitly mentions the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, but leaks over the past few months have vehemently pointed at a Leica partnership on the flagship phone, and it's safe to say that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra is the device in question here.
As for the collaboration itself, the video makes references to joint research and development between the two companies, with a team of three Leica engineers being sent over to Xiaomi's Beijing facility. The video also manages to raise hype for the flagship phone's hardware, with a lens said to offer a very high resolution and a new sensor delivering "huge dynamic range".
While it's difficult to gauge the scope of this partnership between the two companies—there are no direct references to hardware contributions by Leica—it'll be interesting to see real-world results. Huawei, for example, gained a reputation for offering some of the best camera smartphones on the market during its collaboration with Leica. On the flip side, most would consider a similar partnership between Hasselblad and OnePlus to have yielded little to no tangible real-world improvements.
