Windows 11 bug deletes Nvidia drivers on Asus laptops in Eco Mode

A Windows 11 background maintenance routine appears to be deleting discrete graphics drivers on some ASUS ROG gaming laptops that spend extended periods in low-power modes. The issue surfaced when a Reddit user documented Windows removing the Nvidia driver from an Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 equipped with an RTX 5070 Ti laptop GPU, and similar reports have since emerged from other Zephyrus G14 owners.

Eco mode and the pnpclean trigger

As per third-party media, the problem traces back to how Asus manages power profiles through Armoury Crate and the third-party G-Helper utility. Selecting Eco mode power-gates the dedicated Nvidia GPU entirely, cutting it off from the PCIe bus so Windows 11 sees it as disconnected hardware rather than simply idle.

Windows runs a background maintenance task, handled by a component called pnpclean.dll, that removes driver packages for devices it considers absent past a set timeout. According to the affected user's Windows setup logs, the default cleanup window is 30 days, but the Nvidia GPU on their system carried a shorter 15-day value. After more than two weeks in Eco mode, Windows flagged the dormant driver as unused and deleted it, the same way it would clean up an unplugged USB device. Microsoft's own documentation confirms pnpclean.dll is designed to clear unused device driver packages, though its interaction with GPU power-gating had gone unnoticed until this case surfaced.

What happens when the driver disappears

Switching back to a standard GPU mode in Armoury Crate restores power to the graphics card, but Windows no longer has a driver package to reinstall automatically. Device Manager instead shows the GPU as a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and full functionality only returns once the Nvidia GeForce Game Ready driver is reinstalled manually. It remains unclear whether the fault is limited to Zephyrus G14 units or affects other Asus ROG models more broadly.

No official fix yet, but workarounds exist

Neither Microsoft nor Asus has issued an official patch. G-Helper has added a warning about the driver cleanup risk and suggests disabling the automatic process via a registry edit to the VolumeCaches Device Driver Packages key. Users can also avoid the issue by switching out of Eco mode every couple of weeks before the 15-day timer expires.
