To make life difficult for cyber criminals, Meta is restricting the screenshot function when using WhatsApp. However, the update has not yet arrived on all smartphones.

Meta is constantly striving to make WhatsApp more user-friendly and secure. For example, users were given the opportunity to edit sent messages afterwards. At the beginning of the year, the change of the main color was tested as part of an iOS beta test. The latest change is intended to make WhatsApp a little more secure.

Specifically, the change relates to the restriction of the screenshot function for profile pictures. As Android Police reports, users who take screenshots of their contacts' profile pictures will encounter an error message or receive a black image. While the screenshot function continues to work in the preview, it is blocked as soon as the image is opened in full-screen view.

As not all users are currently affected by the restrictions, the update appears to be rolled out gradually. So far, no similar restrictions have been identified for iOS users. However, it can be assumed that iPhones will also receive the update. Official information from Meta remains to be seen.

Restriction easy to circumvent

The reason for the introduction of the update is presumably the increasing problem of identity theft. However, it is conceivable that cyber criminals could easily circumvent the restriction - for example by using screen capture software or by photographing the screen with another device. Nevertheless, it is a step towards data protection and security, as at least the easiest way of capturing profile pictures without the user's consent is made more difficult.
