After almost ten years of development, the release of Rise of the Ronin is finally just around the corner. It is the first open-world RPG from Team Ninja, which until now has mainly been known for titles from the Soulslike genre.

Rise of the Ronin is in the starting blocks: on March 22, the open-wild RPG will be released exclusively for the PlayStation 5 (pre-order here on Amazon). The game is being developed by Koei Tecmo's game division "Team Ninja" and published by Sony. Team Ninja is known for their work on Wo-Long: Fallen Dynasty and the Nioh series. With Rise of the Ronin, the development team is moving away from the previous Souls-like titles and venturing into the open-world RPG genre for the first time. Although the recently released launch trailer does not show any new gameplay, it should whet the appetite of some for the Japanese scenario:

What players can expect in Rise of the Ronin

Rise of the Ronin takes players to Japan in the late 19th century during the Edo era. The game revolves around the Boshin War between the Tokugawa shogunate and various factions fighting against Western influence after the forced opening of Japan.

Players take on the role of a ronin - a masterless samurai who travels as a mercenary and can be freely customized in the character editor. The gameplay is characterized by Team Ninja's characteristically flowing battles with different fighting styles. Players fight with a wide range of weapons such as katanas, spears, bows, throwing knives, revolvers and muskets. One highlight is the "fire pipe" - a kind of flamethrower that players can use to really heat up their opponents.

In Team Ninja's open-world RPG, players can join different factions and make their own decisions that have a direct influence on the course of the story. We do not yet know how big the open world is. However, with Edo (today's Tokyo), Kyoto and Yokohama, there are certainly historical locations to discover. Movement is not only on foot or on horseback, but also by grappling hook and glider. Players also have the opportunity to team up with others in cooperative multiplayer mode and overcome challenges together.
