PlayStation 5 Pro: Sony to deploy PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution upscaling technology to achieve 4K and 60 FPS or 8K and 30 FPS performance targets on PS5 Pro console
Tom Henderson and Insider Gaming have revealed yet more information about Sony's next game console. To recap, Henderson wrote earlier this week that the PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) remains on track for an autumn 2024 release with the same CPU as current PS5 models but a vastly superior GPU. Supposedly, the latter will render objects 45% faster than the RDNA 2-derived GPU that powers all retail PS5 consoles, among other changes.
Nonetheless, Sony still expects the PS5 Pro to be too weak for native 4K/60 FPS gaming across all titles. As a result, the company plans to deploy an upscaling solution called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to reach this resolution and frame rate combination. Allegedly, PSSR will allow the PS5 Pro to game at 8K and 30 FPS as well, which is well beyond the PS5's capabilities.
With that being said, we suspect that Sony will have to reduce image quality to push 4x more pixels at just 50% fewer frames. Either way, alleged internal documents viewed by Henderson hope that the PS5 Pro with PSSR enabled can deliver 1440p and 60 FPS gameplay in titles where the PS5 can only manage 60 FPS at 1080p in performance mode. Similarly, PSSR is hoped to give developers enough headroom with the PS5 Pro to add raytracing while maintaining a 60 FPS target. Reportedly, Sony has ambitions of pushing PSSR to 4K/120 FPS and 8K/60 FPS, although Henderson implies that this will not occur until a future hardware release altogether.
