Timex Metropolitan smartwatch: Timex teams up with Huami to create an elegant Amazfit-inspired wearable for US$179
Early reviews of the Timex Metropolitan R smartwatch have started appearing online, revealing some of the wearable’s secrets. Although the smartwatch features the well-known Timex brand name, it appears the new device was developed in conjunction with Huami, the Xiaomi subsidiary noted for its work with Amazfit smartwatches and Mi Band fitness trackers.
Timex will be introducing two series of the Metropolitan smartwatches: The Metropolitan R smartwatch has a round face while the Metropolitan S smartwatch has a square face. Both variants have been priced at US$179 and will possibly be launched on either June 10 or June 16, depending on the source.
The Timex Metropolitan R has a 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen and can operate in conjunction with either Android or iOS devices. The 42 mm round case (36 mm for the Metropolitan S) features two buttons on the right-hand side, and the smartwatch itself weighs a light 39 g.
Battery life for the R variant is apparently around 12 days on a single charge and 14 days for the S variant. GPS is available on the Timex Metropolitan smartwatch, and there is a host of fitness-related features as well. The activity tracker is also water-resistant to 30 m.
The Timex Metropolitan R, which has been tested by Digital Trends and Engadget among others, is very similar to the Xiaomi Amazfit GTR (and the Metropolitan S apes the Amazfit GTS wearable). With this team-up, the upcoming smartwatch combines the elegant watch construction of Timex with the smart wearable know-how of Huami.
