Samsung has activated the temperature sensor it includes in the Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro, months after releasing the pair. The infrared sensor should be capable of collecting precise data, but only in certain circumstances. The new feature arrives through the pair's latest software update.

Samsung has finally released an update for the Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro that activates their skin temperature sensor. Like the Apple Watch Series 8 and Watch Ultra, Samsung limits the sensor to tracking menstrual cycles. For some reason, Samsung does not allow the Galaxy Watch5 series to detect a fever or provide more accurate sleep phase tracking.

Regardless, Samsung states that One UI Watch interprets data to forecast all menstrual cycle stages. Additionally, the Galaxy Watch5 series can provide a chart for the previous month. According to the company, the feature can be enabled through the Samsung Health app under Cycle Tracking.

Please note that Samsung stores all skin temperature data locally on your Galaxy Watch5 or Galaxy Watch5 Pro and not on its servers. Also, Samsung claims that it encrypts all data too, for added peace of mind should your smartwatch be compromised in one way or another. Currently, the update is rolling out across Europe. Please see Samsung's press release for more details.
