Samsung's second-gen smart tag is indeed on track to launch soon, according to new documentation from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The regulator indicates that it may have grown in size compared to the inaugural Galaxy SmartTag, and contains two antenna types for different modes of connecting to paired or related devices. Accordingly, the SmartTag2 is thought to consolidate the features of Samsung's standard and premium smart tracker devices in this generation.

Samsung may have revamped its take on the smart tracker to a surprisingly considerable degree with the Galaxy SmartTag2, a product that could easily be mistaken for a physical car key in new images taken as part of its FCC registration. The new shape also integrates a much larger ring compared to the original, square SmartTag.

The reason for this design overhaul remains unclear, although it is apparent that this new shape may prove much easier to attach to more personal possessions, and may be much harder to either lose (or "hide") in the future.

In any case, the Galaxy SmartTag2 - or EI-T5600, whereas the original SmartTag is the EI-T5300 - is ostensibly made to fit an antenna for advanced ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless tech as well as one for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), whereas the former was exclusive to the Galaxy SmartTag Plus.

Accordingly, the second-gen SmartTag should be touted as capable of fun tricks such the ability to track it down in AR as well as in a map-based smartphone UI on its launch. On that note, the upcoming accessory has been thought to make it to Samsung's rumored North American product event of early August 2023.

However, as its FCC certification is at a preliminary stage at the time of writing, that theory is looking over-optimistic, with some contributors predicting that it might arrive closer to the end of 2023 if not outright delayed until 2024.
