Reviews for the Samsung Galaxy S8
Smaller and fine-spun. Samsung's successor of the successful Galaxy S7 immediately catches the eye with its new design language: narrower edges and more screen. The Galaxy S8 is also a slightly more balanced product than its sister model, and its price is even lower.
Update: Additional reference values for the Snapdragon 835 powered S8 (SM-G950U) added.

The Galaxy Tab S8 is still a very good tablet. The 11in display is the ideal size – big enough to work on, small enough to use in one hand – and specs are strong despite the affordable price. I wish the screen was OLED, and Android still isn’t perfect for tablets, but there’s not much else to complain about.

Archive.org versionAt the time of writing (January 2019), the Samsung Galaxy S8 is an almost two-year-old device—and in mobile technology terms, that makes it pretty much an ancient smartphone. However, while the S8’s front camera cannot quite keep up with the latest high-end smartphones, it still delivers very solid results, with mostly good exposures and a very good balance between noise reduction and detail preservation in still image mode. Selfie videos are pretty good, too, with the exception of a slightly ineffective stabilization system that can result in distortion effects. Overall, the Galaxy S8 is still an attractive option for the budding selfie shooter, despite its age.

Archive.org versionIt’s clear that, with the Galaxy S8 and S8+, Samsung set out to create more than a phone. It’s trying to build a more Apple-like ecosystem, with devices ranging from the Gear VR and the DeX dock to the new Samsung Connect app for controlling smart home gear and the Bixby assistant. It’s also evident that Samsung hasn’t yet reached that goal, as Bixby’s voice features can be hit or miss.

Archive.org versionThe Samsung Galaxy S8 is a phone that should be one of the very first you look at when deciding which new phone you buy. The large, bezel-less display is truly iconic and beautiful, and the screen quality excellent. The fingerprint scanner being placed on the back of the phone is a poor decision from Samsung, as well as the iris scanner / facial recognition not working anywhere near well enough to be a real consideration. However, these aren’t deal breakers, and the improved battery life and tweaked camera will be among the best you’ll find on a top-end flagship. The Galaxy S8 is an expensive phone - have no doubts about that - but it’s one that we consider to be well worth the investment.

Archive.org versionThe Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus continue Samsung’s recent penchant of combining outstanding smartphone design with an excellent display to create an all-around fantastic experience. The switch to the taller display has allowed Samsung to cram even more screen real estate into its new smartphones and in doing so, the company is setting the new standard for big-screen devices. Think back to what a big screen phone meant a couple of years ago and compare it to the Galaxy S8 and it’s clear that the future is much brighter, and we’re now closer than ever to phone that is all display.

Shooting outdoors, white balance is very good, recording virtually no colorcasts or errors during our tests. The Samsung Galaxy S8 also records very low levels of noise in almost all lighting conditions, which should be appealing to photographers looking to record portraits with smooth skin tones. The Samsung Galaxy S8’s main weakness for stills is linked to its low noise, however, as its pictures have lower levels of sharpness compared to those of its main competitors.

It has a brilliant Infinite display that blends seamlessly into the body of the phone on all the side and the new Samsung UX complements it. Build quality of the phone is good and the performance is good as well without any lags. One of the main concerns is the placement of the fingerprint sensor on the back that makes it useless. Hope the upcoming Galaxy Note8 will use under-glass fingerprint sensor as rumored. Archive.org versionMost definitely yes. The Galaxy S8 is Samsung's best phone ever. In fact, it's safe to say, that it's the best Android phone in the market right now. I like the Galaxy S8 more because it's more handy and convenient. But, the 3,000mAh battery inside the Galaxy S8 does leave me asking for more. While most users would be able to get one full working day of usage out of it, heavy users will have to charge it at least twice every day. It charges like a speeding bullet though which is a big plus.

Archive.org versionThere are quite a few exciting phones releasing in the second half of the year including Samsung’s Note 8 as well as Apple’s new iPhone and Google’s new Pixel. However, with the S8, Samsung has set the bar very high for other phone manufacturers to follow and unless a phone is spectacular, it won’t be able to beat the Galaxy S8. It’s easily the best smartphone out there at the moment and I don't see that changing for the next few months.

In fact, the glass back part of the flagship device cracked on the very first drop, as tested by CNET. Archive.org versionWhile we’ve only had the Galaxy S8 for a couple of days, our first impression is generally positive. It’s packed with features, TouchWiz is more refined, and it performed well in our first performance and battery life tests. A few issues are already apparent, however. Your face probably will not be smiling if you try to rely on it to unlock the phone, and the fingerprint sensor is located in just about the worst possible place. Archive.org versionThe Samsung 2017 flagship, compact edition. Can the Galaxy S8 make even the die-hard fans of the big-screen experience consider converting? Think about it - you get so much screen in a phone that's practically as wide as a iPhone 7. Heck, the S8 is just 3mm wider than the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact, the last of the true Xperia Compacts.

Archive.org versionThis is the kind of usability nightmare that would have instantly killed our ability to recommend the phone, if it didn’t also include an iris scanner that is impressively fast, reliable, and secure. It’s improved a bit since its debut on the ill-fated Galaxy Note7, and while you do need to use your fingerprint for some apps, unlocking your phone and signing in to Samsung apps with your eyes is fast, secure, and reliable enough to greatly mitigate the disastrous fingerprint scanner placement.

Archive.org versionDespite the stark new appearance and display aspect ratio, it is yet to be decided if this new, almost bezel-less design trend of the Galaxy S8 is going to lead to a meaningful change in how we experience the smartphone as a tool. Having the bezels reduced is perfectly OK when it comes to aesthetics, but introducing an extra tall display is a change of practical meaning. Throughout this review, we saw that the taller display could be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it does allow for more content to be shown without increasing the width of the phone, which is always good, but on the other, it can lead to usability discomfort in case the user interface and the content viewed are not optimized well enough for the extravagant aspect ratio. And in the case of the Galaxy S8, we can’t say that all has been executed flawlessly.

The S8's flaws are so few and far between I can hardly bring myself to bother repeating them here because everything else is so darned good. The Infinity Display and the metal/glass chassis that embraces it are impressive beyond words. The oblong shape may require a short adjustment period, but I assure you you'll fall in love with the S8, if not for its good looks then for its proven performance and winning personality. This is a phone that felt at home in my hands when I went hands-on with it for several hours at a journalist briefing in San Francisco. Better even than the LG G6, which has similar proportions but no curved screen, and sleeker than the iPhone 7 Plus, which puts a smaller screen on taller, wider body. Prolific leaker Evan Blass posted expected European pricing for both phones a few days ago and it isn’t pretty. Even accounting the fact that European pricing will always be higher due to higher taxes, you can expect the Galaxy S8 to be priced near the 40K mark, while the Galaxy S8+ will certainly be in the low 40’s. Model: The Samsung Galaxy S8 is one of those phones that is up against some massively impressive competition in 2017. It is a very strong phone with great design and hardware specification. One of the most noticeable changes on the Galaxy S8 is that it's got around the loss of the front-facing home screen button, which means the handset is usable without requiring the mechanical key on the front of the Galaxy S8. Samsung has created two smartphones with big, beautiful screens that are both far more comfortable to use than any comparable models from the company’s rivals. While the Infinity Display (as Samsung is calling this edge-to-edge effort) isn't completely bezel-less at the sides, it still seems to spill over to the back of the phone. It’s by far the lowest bezel-to-screen ratio seen on a globally-available flagship phone so far. Besides that, Samsung has spent two years convincing the world that a curved screen is best, and the fact it's on this handset is a testament to that effort.
The 5.8-inch screen is packed tightly into the frame but it's still large at 148.90 x 68 x 8 mm. The fingerprint scanner is on the back by the camera. However, it's rather hard to use from the natural holding position for a phone in your palm because it is too close to the camera. Being the one that packs in wireless charging and an IP68 rating, user can immerse this phone in water and dust with little worry. In addition, they do not even need to plug in a cable to charge it. The 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display is clear, bright and colorful, with a QHD resolution. However, it's worth noting that the QHD element has been reduced by default: The user will be looking at a Full HD offering to start with. Thus, there is a need to choose to enable the full resolution capability in settings. As it allows more content to be split down the front of the phone, all the internal apps are optimized to make use of this larger space.
Samsung also launched Bixby, which is its own intelligent assistant, before the launch of the phone. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is clearly the launch vehicle for the AI service. There is a dedicated Bixby key on the side of the Galaxy S8. So, the user always has instant access to the portal. According to Samsung, Bixby is meant to be a frictionless assistant that can follow the user through voice, the camera or touch, learning what user want it to do, and not requiring the user to know a specific set of phrases to make it work. As for hardware specification, it has 4 GB of RAM alongside the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and 64 GB storage. The storage is expandable via microSD slot by up to 256 GB. The front camera has seen a bigger upgrade, with a new 8 MP sensor. It also has a f/1.7 aperture and autofocus, which is still a rarity on selfie cameras. There is a 8 MP secondary camera on the front too. For the operating system, the Samsung Galaxy S8 runs on Android 7.1 Nougat. The S8 is certainly one of the best flagship device out there now but being the best also means it is going to cost much more than the rest.
