Just when gamers thought they understood how Switch 2 Edition games work, there is more confusion. A Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma FAQ makes an interesting comment about the included cartridge. Developer Marvelous revealed that the Switch 2 Edition cartridge contains a version for the original Switch. Now, Nintendo fans are wondering if other Switch 2 games will offer the same perk.
Titles made exclusively for the Switch 2 may not boot on the older console. However, Switch 2 Edition games like Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma could be an exception. These titles are Switch games with additional content and enhancements to take advantage of the improved Switch 2 specs. What's unexpected is that the physical cartridges would be compatible with the first Switch.
The latest revelation opens up possibilities for gamers considering a Switch 2 pre-order. With shortages likely, buyers can purchase a Switch 2 Edition game and play it on the current console. Then, if a gamer manages to snag the new Nintendo system, he/she can access upgraded visuals. In the case of Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, Joy-Con mouse functionality is another benefit. Or, owners can share Switch 2 games with family friends who still have the original Switch.
Ahead of the Switch 2 release date, gamers discovered that cartridges made for the console would have notches. The speculation was that this design would prevent the media from working on the Switch. The Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma cartridge may have an alternate design, or the notch may have another purpose.
Marvelous also notes that the Switch 2 Edition release comes on a 64 GB cartridge. An earlier rumor suggested publishers could only choose from 8 GB or 64 GB sizes. The Rune Factory title may not take up nearly 64 GB, but the capacity enables the cartridge to fit versions for multiple consoles.
The FAQ may contain an error, but for now, certain Switch 2 Edition games appear more versatile than expected.
