Retroid has finally released a new version of the Pocket 2S, over five months after the device's debut. In summary, Retroid began teasing the Pocket 2S in July, before launching the gaming handheld in six colours with a $99 starting price. However, Retroid also teased a metal version, which it waited until late October before revealing fully.
Now, the company has dropped the 'Pocket 2S Metal Edition', which contains the same hardware as the standard variants. Hence, the Metal Edition combines a Unisoc Tiger T610 chipset with a 4,000 mAh battery. For reference, the former features two ARM Cortex-A75 CPU cores, six Cortex-A55 CPU cores and a Mali-G52 MC2 GPU clocked at 1.8 GHz, 1.8 GHz and 614 MHz, respectively.
Additionally, the Metal Edition utilises a 3.5-inch IPS display that outputs in a 4:3 aspect ratio at 640 x 480 pixels. Moreover, the panel provides a 60 Hz refresh rate and has a touchscreen layer as an alternative input method. Retroid continues to pre-install Android 11 too, with no Android 12, 13 or Android 14 upgrades offered since the Pocket 2S' release.
Surprisingly, Retroid has dropped its entry-level 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage model for the Metal Edition. As a result, the Pocket 2S Metal Edition is available for $149 with a sole 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage configuration. At launch, Retroid has discounted the Metal Edition by $4 to $145, although only until December 23. Please note that these prices do not include shipping or taxes.
