Ayaneo Flip: Gaming handheld with keyboard or two screens in Nintendo DS style gets processor update

Ayaneo recently announced a new gaming handheld, the Ayaneo Flip. This will come onto the market in two variants, the Ayaneo Flip KB and Ayaneo Flip DS. Both models have a foldable 7-inch screen with a Full HD resolution and 120 Hz, which protects the display during transport and makes the handheld more compact. The difference between the two variants is that the Ayaneo Flip KB has a keyboard, while the Ayaneo Flip DS has a second touchscreen. The DS variant is, for example, particularly suitable for emulating Nintendo DS game titles, but also allows additional information to be displayed or the TDP to be controlled while playing. The convenient use of a messenger is also conceivable. The touchscreen measures 3.5 inches diagonally.

Up to now, Ayaneo has stated that it planned to offer the Ayaneo Flip with an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U. Now it is known that the handheld will also be available with an AMD Ryzen 7 8840U. This has 8 computing cores, which can process 16 threads. There are no fundamental differences in features, nor is a higher clock rate supported. However, the integrated NPU should be significantly stronger, meaning that AI apps should run faster. We would rate the practical benefit of a more powerful NPU in a gaming handheld as rather low, so buying a possibly more expensive Ayaneo Flip with the AMD Ryzen 8840U is not necessarily advantageous.

By default, the handheld is equipped with joysticks with Hall sensors and Hall triggers, action buttons and a mouse joystick. The Ayaneo Flip will also be sold as part of an Indiegogo campaign - as usual for Ayaneo, this is probably just a pre-order campaign in disguise. The manufacturer plans to present the model in detail on January 3.
