The Realme GT 8 Pro is the world's first smartphone with cameras developed in collaboration with Ricoh. Many of the advertised benefits of this partnership may just be marketing hype, but at least four Ricoh GR features should be of genuine interest to photography enthusiasts.

The Realme GT 8 Pro, the first camera flagship with Ricoh co-branding, is set to be unveiled this month. Over the past few days, Realme has already shared some impressive sample photos and heavily advertised the lens's anti-reflective coating, but lens flare is almost never a problem on modern smartphones.

The same applies to speed – 0.6 seconds to get the camera ready for use may be fast, but competitors such as the Apple iPhone 17 are also just as quick. Realme has now released more teaser images, and it's slowly but surely becoming clear that the Ricoh partnership will bring at least four features that should be interesting for photography enthusiasts:

  1. Snap Focus
  2. Ricoh GR Film Tones (Filter)
  3. 35mm equivalent focal length of 28mm / 40mm
  4. Distraction-free display modes

The most unusual feature for smartphones on this list is probably Snap Focus. This disables autofocus, allowing users to pre-select the focus distance instead. The implementation is not quite as successful as on the Ricoh GR IV, because, at least according to the screenshot, the camera app does not show the area of objects in focus, apart from the set distance. Nevertheless, the feature is useful for street photography, as it means that the autofocus does not have to be activated before pressing the shutter button, which should reduce shutter lag.

The Ricoh GR Film Tones are based on the filters of the Ricoh GR IV, giving photographers a solid selection of looks with Negative Film, Positive Film, Standard, and two black-and-white modes, which look quite stylish according to initial sample photos. The Realme GT 8 Pro's camera app can simulate a 35mm equivalent focal length of 28mm and 40mm, mimicking the focal lengths of the Ricoh GR IV and Ricoh GR IIIx.

However, since Realme has to resort to digital zoom for this, the feature negatively impacts image quality. Lastly, Realme's Ricoh camera app offers the option of hiding all distracting elements or unnecessary buttons so you can fully concentrate on your shoot – just like the function of the Ricoh GR IV's display button.
