Ricoh has announced two upcoming variants of the GR IV high-end compact digital camera, the Ricoh GR IV HDF and Ricoh GR IV Monochrome models. All models use a 25.74 MP APS-C CMOS image sensor coupled with an f/2.8 28 mm (35 mm equivalent) lens, designed for high-image quality with low distortion and aberration.
The Ricoh GR IV HDF adds an internal Highlight Diffusion Filter designed to diffuse highlights for a softer image with lower contrast, according to the company. This feature was first added to the GR III/IIIx series in 2024, and this video showcases its effect upon images captured with those cameras. The GR IV HDF is scheduled for release in Winter 2025.
The Ricoh GR IV Monochrome uses a monochrome CMOS sensor optimized for capturing black and white photos, eliminating the need for tedious color-to-B&W image conversion during post-processing. By removing the color filter, its sensitivity range shifts from the base model's 100 to 204,800 ISO to 160 to 409,600 ISO, enhancing its low-light photography capabilities. The GR IV Monochrome is scheduled for release in Spring 2026.
Both variants retain the core features of the base model, including a 3-inch color display, hybrid phase and contrast autofocus system, and 1080p 60fps video recording, though specifications may be subject to change.
Readers can look for the new models in the Ricoh store on Amazon after their planned launch dates. Currently, only the GR III/IIIx models are available on Amazon, such as this one.
