Pixii unveils rangefinder camera with brand new design in first teaser image
After the discontinuation of the Epson R-D1 in 2009, the Leica M series was the only option for customers looking to buy a digital rangefinder camera until French start-up Pixii launched an alternative to the Leica M in 2018. This first model was equipped with an APS-C format sensor, but the Pixii Max, featuring a full-frame sensor, followed in July 2024.
A lot has happened between the first Pixii in 2018 and the current Pixii Max. The manufacturer has modernized the sensor and processor and improved the rangefinder. However, the design remained virtually unchanged between 2018 and 2024. This is now apparently changing, as the manufacturer has published a teaser image on its official website showing a new camera, along with the slogan "We invent the future".
Although the teaser image only shows part of the camera, it confirms that Pixii is making significant changes. The Pixii logo on the top is gone, as is the small display and the arrows with LEDs that indicated whether a photo was over- or underexposed. The large dial on the top is unlabeled, so its function can probably be freely customized by the user. An LED ring can be seen around the shutter release button.
The rangefinder will apparently be retained, as will the Leica M bayonet and the two eyelets for attaching a camera strap. The removal of the display on the top, however, suggests that the next-generation Pixii will have a rear display, unlike the current model. Further details on the features, price or launch date of the new camera are still pending.
