The Nubia Z80 Ultra is now official as a replacement for the existing Z70 Ultra and Z70S Ultra. As expected, Nubia's latest Z series smartphone retains the same boxy design as other high-end smartphones produced by parent company ZTE, including the gaming-focused RedMagic 10 Air and RedMagic 10 Pro (curr. $899 on Amazon).
Like the recent RedMagic 11 Pro, the Nubia Z80 Ultra adopts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset that Nubia complements with a 7,200 mAh battery, which the device can recharge at up to 80 W wirelessly and 90 W via its USB 3.2 Type-C port. Moreover, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processes images on the following four cameras:
- Primary: 50 MP, 35 mm equivalent focal length, 1/1.3-inch optical format, f/1.7 aperture, OIS
- Telephoto: 64 MP, 85 mm equivalent focal length, 1/2.0-inch optical format, f/2.5 aperture, OIS, 3.3x optical zoom
- Ultra-wide-angle: 50 MP, 18 mm equivalent focal length, 1/1.55-inch optical format, f/1.8 aperture
- Front-facing: 16 MP, 24 mm equivalent focal length, 1/2.8-inch optical format, f/2.0 aperture
Additionally, the Z80 Ultra supports a macro mode from 15 cm away via its ultra-wide-angle camera. Also, Nubia continues to hide its front-facing camera via under-panel camera technology. As a result, the 6.85-inch AMOLED display is unencumbered by a camera punch hole. While the large display also outputs at 2,688 x 1,216 pixels with a 2,592 Hz PWM frequency, a 144 Hz refresh rate and a 3,000 Hz touch sampling rate, its 2,000 nits peak brightness is on the low side.
The Nubia Z80 Ultra starts at CNY 4,999 (~$702) in China with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. Alternatively, the device can be configured up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage for CNY 5,699 (~$800). Meanwhile, the device's dedicated camera kit pictured below retails for CNY 699 (~$98). Nubia has also shared initial information about the smartphone's global launch, full details of which we have covered separately.
