While the first leaked photos of the Model 3 Highland refresh featured a front bumper camera like the one Tesla installed on the Cybertruck for the first time, the facelifted version that it released in the US didn't have one.
The camera and washer system located in the front bumper camera, however, has since become a staple on all Tesla models, including the cheapest Model 3 Standard and Model Y Standard, leaving the more expensive Model 3 Premium in the wind.
Tesla has now started production of an updated 2026 Model 3 Premium at its factory in Fremont, and all new units include both a front bumper camera, and a turn signal stalk. Those Model 3 Highland owners who bought the refresh before this update will be able to retrofit a turn stalk by ordering its installation for $595 at Tesla's web store.
Model 3 front bumper camera retrofit
The front bumper camera, however, won't be available as a retrofit, despite that it seemingly requires only changing the Model 3 grille.
This is unfortunate as the camera there isn't just for parking duties, after Tesla removed the USS sensors in the bumper to save $144 apiece. There are code indications that Tesla is now also incorporating the bumper camera feed into its FSD algorithms, too so the lack of one in the HW4 kit of a Model 3 could mean that older units will be unable to join the Robotaxi service fleet if and when Tesla opens the platform for current owners.
Tesla is not one to spend on parts that will only be used sparingly, so the front bumper camera might now be incorporated in the FSD 14 feeds indeed, and this could be why Tesla is adding it to future production units. The new FSD 14 allows picking where to park at the end of a trip, and the v14.2 will include on the spot selection in parking garages, where a front bumper camera feed could come in handy.
