Casio’s retro watch lineup is about to get bigger with new mesh bracelet editions: the A158WEM and AQ-230EM, both revealed in online leaks and lifestyle shots from reliable source Casioblog. These models feature the classic time-tested square designs and functionality that have kept the A158 and AQ-230 core series at the center of Casio’s affordable vintage classics for decades.
The Casio A158 dates back to 1989 and the AQ-230 made its debut in 1995. They both earned a strong international following, thanks to their reliability, minimalist design, and wallet-friendly pricing. Despite stark differences in display approach - digital for A158, hybrid analog-digital for AQ-230 - both series are a hallmark of Casio’s "Vintage" line and are widely considered go-to standards for retro and new buyers alike.
The upcoming A158WEM and AQ-230EM for 2025 feature a steel mesh bracelet design for the first time. This finely woven strap type looks like chain mail and is lighter and more flexible. It also helps that it doesn’t snag wrist hair. New variants for each series include:
- A158WEM-3 and A158WEM-7 (standard digital dial)
- AQ-230EM-2A (blue dial hybrid), AQ-230EM-7A (silver dial hybrid)
The AQ-230’s dial is equipped with elegant analog hands and slim hour markers, alongside an extended display window for that extra "vintage" appeal. This model’s design traces back to the AQ-500 ("Janus") of 1982, famous for its metallic effect dial plate. Both new mesh editions feature plastic cases and bezels with chrome finishing, plus plastic glass. This is why they're relatively affordable.
Specs overview:
- A158: Digital functions—alarm, calendar, LED backlight, 7-year battery
- AQ-230: Dual time, stopwatch (60 minutes), alarm, 3-year battery
- Both: Water resistance rated for 30 meters
Price and availability
