Last month, Xiaomi became the first Android OEM to start selling Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5-backed smartphones. While the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max are all flagship handsets, iQOO and Realme have since fought back with the cheaper iQOO 15 and Realme GT 8 Pro, respectively. In response, Xiaomi has now unleashed the Redmi K90 Pro Max, which serves to replace last year's Redmi K80 Pro in China and the Poco F7 Ultra globally (curr. $759 on Amazon).
As such, Xiaomi has swapped the Snapdragon 8 Elite for a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which it partners with LPDDR5X RAM and a new 7,560 mAh silicon carbon battery. Although 50 W wireless charging returns, Xiaomi has dropped 120 W wired charging from the Redmi K80 Pro in favour of 100 W wired charging for the Redmi K90 Pro Max. This year's higher-end Redmi K model has also grown to 163.33 x 77.82 x 7.9 mm and 218 g to accommodate a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 2,608 x 1,200-pixel resolution, a 120 Hz refresh rate and 3,500 nits peak brightness that can drop to 1 nit in low light conditions.
Moreover, the Redmi K90 Pro Max boasts a Light Hunter 950 sensor as its 50 MP primary camera with a 1/1.31-inch optical format and 13.5 EV dynamic range. Also, Xiaomi has included a 5x telephoto camera this year, which outputs natively at 50 MP thanks to its underlying ISOCELL JN5 sensor. Elsewhere, the Redmi K90 Pro Max features 50 MP OmniVision OV50M ultra-wide and 32 MP front-facing cameras.
The Redmi K90 Pro Max starts at CNY 3,999 (~$561) with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Already available to import, the device can also be configured with up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage for CNY 5,299 (~$744). Alternatively, the Redmi K90 Pro Max can be picked up as the Redmi K90 Pro Max Champion Edition with special Lamborghini branding. Priced at CNY 5,499 (~$772), this variant is unlikely to receive an official global release as the Poco F8 Ultra and may even be tricky to pick up from importers.
