Xiaomi has now launched the Xiaomi 17 in China, replacing the Xiaomi 15 in the process (curr. $890 on Amazon). As expected, the Xiaomi 17 surpasses its predecessor in almost every area possible, and not just with Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. For instance, the Xiaomi 17 is even smaller than last year's model at 151.1 x 71.8 x 8.06 mm.
The weight of Xiaomi's smallest flagship still hovers at around 191 g, though. Nonetheless, this year's compact flagship drops to a 6.3-inch display size, with which sits a 2,656 x 1,220 pixel, 120 Hz and 3,500-nit LTPO AMOLED panel. Additionally, peak battery capacity has grown from 5,400 mAh to 7,000 mAh with support for 100 W wired and 50 W wireless charging.
On top of that, the Xiaomi 17 will ship with HyperOS 3 pre-installed. Incidentally, the Xiaomi 15T and Xiaomi 15T Pro were the first smartphones that Xiaomi announced running its latest mobile OS. Moreover, Xiaomi has installed the following cameras:
- Primary: 50 MP, Light Hunter 950, f/1.67, 23 mm equivalent focal length, OIS
- Telephoto: 50 MP, f/2.0, 60 mm equivalent focal length, OIS
- Ultra-wide-angle: 50 MP, f/2.4, 102° FoV
- Front-facing: 50 MP, f/2.2, 90° FoV
The Xiaomi 17 is available to order from today in China, starting at CNY 4,499 (~$632) with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Alternatively, Xiaomi offers the handset with 512 GB of storage and 12 GB or 16 GB of RAM for CNY 4,799 (~$674) and CNY 4,999 (~$702), respectively, in a choice of four colours. Xiaomi has not indicated when it plans to offer its new compact flagship globally yet, though.
