A performance and efficiency analysis of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Elite reveals how much power Qualcomm's new flagship chip has to consume in order to outperform the Apple A19 Pro and the MediaTek Dimensity 9500.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 was officially unveiled on Wednesday, and we published initial benchmark results shortly afterwards. YouTube channel Geekerwan has now got its hands on additional power consumption data, comparing not only performance but also efficiency with the direct predecessor model, as well as with the Apple A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro, and with the brand-new MediaTek Dimensity 9500.

According to the results, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Elite consumes around 19 watts of power at full CPU load, compared to the 12 watts of the Apple A19 Pro or the 17 watts of the Snapdragon 8 Elite. This efficiency is significantly better than the predecessor model or the MediaTek Dimensity 9500, whose multi-core performance is surpassed by 17%. The Apple A19 Pro is similarly efficient, but has less leeway; due to the lower clock speeds and the limitation of six instead of eight cores, the chip cannot quite keep up with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Elite when the latter is allowed to consume more power.

GPU benchmarks paint a different picture: At around 12 watts, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Elite consumes 1 to 3 watts less than its competitors from Apple and MediaTek in 3DMark Steel Nomad Light. At least in this benchmark, the Apple A19 Pro's performance is still surpassed, while the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 achieves higher GPU performance than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Elite.

This may make MediaTek's flagship chip more suitable for gaming smartphones. Whether this is actually the case in practice remains to be seen, because at least in Geekerwan's test, Qualcomm's flagship chip managed a slightly higher frame rate with almost identical power consumption in an initial gaming test.
