The new Xiaomi 17 series phones are the first with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 flagship chipset. First doesn't necessarily mean best, however, as benchmark tests on the phones show minor CPU performance improvements relative to last-gen phones from other OEMs.

The new Xiaomi 17 series phones are the first devices to feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. While the phones offer better performance than their direct predecessors, new hands-on benchmark results strongly indicate that they may not be the best representatives of the Qualcomm chipset's performance capabilities.

AnTuTu's latest performance chart highlights this. The Xiaomi 17 is listed with a CPU score of 981,459 on the official chart. Impressive in isolation but only around 3% higher than the Vivo X200 Ultra manages (959,329), despite that phone being powered by last year's Snapdragon 8 Elite. Both the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max score even lower than the vanilla Xiaomi 17.

Geekbench tells a similar story. While pre-launch listings of the Xiaomi 17 series saw the devices cross the 3,700 and 11,000 marks on the single-core and multi-core tests, hands-on results tell a different story. Ben's Gadget Reviews' unit scores 3,376 and 10,120 in comparison, Sahil Karoul's manages 3,328 and 10,210, and Mrwhosetheboss's gets to 3,407 and 10,416. Those numbers are solid but not significantly better than a device like the Oppo Find X8 Ultra, which scored 3,145 and 9,722 in our tests. On the flip side, they're much worse than the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5's QRD device (3,832 and 12,459).

The numbers indicate that the Xiaomi 17 series phones offer slightly worse performance than Qualcomm's new chipset could be capable of, although that isn't atypical of Xiaomi. Likely due to conservative tuning or software demands, Xiaomi—and Samsung, too—devices seem to perform a touch worse than a good number of their peers. Flagships from Honor, Oppo, and RedMagic will likely offer a better perspective on the performance of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
