OLED monitors offer precise colors and superior black levels. The main obstacle to their mass adoption has been price, which is higher than that of most IPS and VA panels. Despite steeper asking prices, OLED monitor sales continue to multiply. According to a January report, the displays accounted for 22 percent of all new monitors sold. Now, LG is making financial predictions that may quiet those skeptical about rapid OLED adoption.
PC Gamer updated readers today after LG issued a monitor-focused press release. The highlight is that the company expects the OLED monitor market to expand from $75 million in 2022 to a staggering over $1 billion in 2025. LG is only one of the players pushing the technology into the mainstream. Samsung and MSI are also finding success with QD-OLED panels that boast improved brightness. However, lesser-known Chinese brands also cater to other buyers with cheaper OLED options.
As more brands invest in OLED panels, the selection only benefits consumers. Ultrawide OLED monitors like Samsung's 49-inch Odyssey immerse gamers or replace multiple 16:9 monitors in a workstation. LG also realizes the wow factor of bigger screens and announced a 45-inch monitor at a 5K2K resolution (5120×2160). At the other end of the spectrum, MSI recently debuted the 27-inch MPG 272URX 4K OLED gaming monitor. This display appeals to esports pros with a maximum 240 Hz refresh rate.
With increased competition, the prices of some OLED monitors have sunk to mid-range levels. Manufacturers have also implemented clever features to alleviate fears of burn-in. At the moment, these monitors still lack the luminance of their OLED TV counterparts. If LG and other brands succeed in upping OLED monitor brightness, it will attract even more buyers.
