Nothing Phone (2a) praised in early reviews despite shortcomings like updates until Android 17
Nothing is now selling the Phone (2a) globally, having presented the mid-range smartphone during an elaborate event in Delhi. As expected, the Phone (2a) features a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset, 12 GB of RAM and a 5,000 mAh battery. Additionally, Nothing equips the device with a large AMOLED display that spans 6.7-inches and outputs at 1080p with a 120 Hz refresh rate.
Moreover, the handset has a pair of 50 MP rear-facing cameras and a 32 MP front-facing camera just like the Phone (2). On top of that, the Phone (2a) will receive three years of major Android OS updates from Android 14 onwards with a fourth-year of security patch updates. In other words, Nothing's latest handset falls short of Samsung's mid-range competition, which will also see a fourth year of OS updates.
It is worth noting that there are some caveats to the release of the Phone (2a) globally. On the one hand, the handset is freely pre-orderable across Europe, India and the UK for €329, £319 and INR 23,999, respectively. On the other hand, Nothing requires those who live in the US to be approved on its developer program before being able to purchase the Phone (2a) for $349.
In short, early reviews point to the Phone (2a) being good value for money, at least in the US. While the device does little to innovate on many of its competitors, it is a well-rounded package that has few shortcomings at $349. Nonetheless, there are some limitations though, including the lack of a dedicated telephoto camera and a plastic back that scratches easily.
