Nothing has outlined plans to replace the Nothing Phone (1) later this month. Returning to its mid-range roots, Nothing will soon release the Nothing Phone (2a), which it insists will be 'a clear upgrade compared to Phone (1) on every single front'.

Nothing has now confirmed that it is working on a new product, nearly two months after hinting as much. To recap, the company outlined in mid-December that it would be attending MWC 2024 in Barcelona, with a 'Nothing to see' event scheduled for February 27. As subsequent leaks suggested, Nothing's next product will be another smartphone, its third to date after the Phone (1) and Phone (2).

According to Nothing, the smartphone has been assigned the retail name Phone (2a), as well as the codename Aerodactyl after the Pokémon character of the same name. Predictably, the Phone (2a) will serve as a cheaper alternative to the Phone (2) that it already sells (curr. $691.50 on Amazon). However, the company insists that the Phone (2a) will also be an upgrade over the Phone (1), which is unsurprising given the latter's positioning as a Pixel 6a competitor.

With Phone (2a), we've really doubled down on the core user needs - performance, camera, you name it...while ensuring it delivers on a clear upgrade compared to Phone (1) on every single front.

Thus, the Phone (2a) will likely rival the Pixel 7a and eventually the Pixel 8a. Seemingly, the latter will arrive before the former though, unlike the Phone (2) and Pixel 6a. For now, Google is expected to deliver the Pixel 8a in May during I/O 2024. As usual, Nothing has decided against revealing any device specifics, although it has used one of the wallpaper designs that @Za_Raczke and SmartPrix leaked at the end of December.

Based on various leaks, the Phone (2a) will utilise the same front-facing and ultra-wide-angle cameras as the Phone (2). Conversely, the former will rely upon ISOCELL GN9 as its primary camera, a 50 MP sensor currently exclusive to the Motorola Moto G84. Moreover, the Phone (2a) has been shown to contain a MediaTek Dimensity 7200, a version of the chipset in the Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus, and is rumoured to be available from around €400 in two memory configurations and colour options.
