Dimensity 9400 generative AI gains outlined in new leak

MediaTek's new Dimensity-series flagship SoC is now linked to the potential for "monstrous" processing and gaming performance, possibly even compared to the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. The 9400 is also now touted to outdo its forebear in these terms by up to 18% while using 32% less energy (the second of which is plausible enough as the 9300 launched with claims of 33% generational improvements in power efficiency). But what about its AI capabilities?

A new leak purports to outline the 9400's putative advantages in this area for the first time. It consists of a table augmenting other currently projected upgrades, namely the step up to a 3nm architecture and the strategic introduction of a next-gen Cortex-X5 core (in place of 1 of the 9300's quad X4s) with performance estimations for 1 well-known large language model (LLM) and 1 equally popular text-to-image generator compared to that of the Dimensity 9300 for the same.

Accordingly, the table (allegedly derived from the estimates of official MediaTek press material) specifies that the 9400 can process 12 to 15 tokens (essentially the most basic unit of text for an LLM) per second using the 7-billion parameter Llama 2 model from Meta.

Similarly, if the 9300 takes 3.5 seconds to create an image using Stable Diffusion 1.5, the 9400 is estimated to take 3 seconds. Accordingly, MediaTek's APU 790 successor is now tipped to be 20-50% and up to 16.7% faster respectively in these terms). Therefore, the OEM could tout it as even more of a "multi-modal generative AI" powerhouse later in 2024.
