Following recent major leaks, much of the Switch 2's design and hardware details are already known. However, speculation about the successor to the Nintendo Switch (available on Amazon for $290) shows no signs of slowing down. Current rumors focus on the console’s launch titles. According to well-known Nintendo leaker Samus Hunter, the Switch 2 could debut with a remake of Final Fantasy 9. Previously, many believed Mario Kart 9 was planned as the flagship launch title.
The leaker points to the Reddit thread that triggered the recent mega-leak. According to Samus Hunter, the details align with information that has been circulating for months. However, the "game with the 9" is reportedly not Mario Kart, but Final Fantasy 9.
Background to the rumors
Final Fantasy 9 was first released in Japan in July 2000, followed by a November launch in the USA and a February 2001 debut in Europe, quickly becoming one of the PlayStation 1's most successful titles. Rumors of a remake have been circulating since a 2021 Nvidia leak, but developer Square Enix has yet to officially confirm a re-release of the PS1 classic.
Final Fantasy 9 was also absent from the Game Awards on December 13, where numerous new titles were announced. This has led to speculation that Nintendo might be saving the reveal of the highly anticipated remake for the Switch 2. However, in the comments on X, many users still believe Mario Kart 9 will serve as the console’s key launch title. The Switch 2 is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks, so fans likely won’t have to wait much longer to see which games Nintendo has lined up for its release.
