Over a year has passed since we reported on the Re-shell kit for the Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED. To recap, the kit served to convert either model into a home console. While that may seem unusual at first glance, the Re-shell kit could give a new lease of life to a Switch with a broken display. Alternatively, the kit's improved cooling helped unlock the Switch's overclocking potential.
Although the Re-shell kit proved popular within the Switch modding community, it suffered from shortcomings. For instance, the kit lacked external MicroSD and USB Type-A port access. Moreover, it could not prevent a Switch or Switch OLED from keeping its fan on when connected to power. According to Macho Nacho Productions, developer SetEngineering has rectified these issues with the Switch NXii kit, which the former has dubbed the 'Switch Pro shell mod'.
Please note that the new kit is only compatible with V1 and V2 consoles. On the one hand, SetEngineering has included a fan control PCB and an SD card breakout board in response to community feedback. As a result, the Switch NXii can disable the console's fan in sleep mode or when powered off. On top of that, there is now easy MicroSD card reader and USB Type-A port access via the kit's left-hand side.
Furthermore, the new kit is compatible with a Noctua NF-A9x14 PWM 92 mm fan (curr. $18.95 on Amazon), compared to the 80 mm unbranded equivalent found in the Re-shell kit. Consequently, the Switch NXii kit allows a modded Switch to run with 50% RAM, 50% GPU and 125% CPU overclocks without any temperature trade-offs. In fact, Macho Nacho Productions has demonstrated that their Switch Pro shell mod delivers a 7.5°C PCB temperature drop.
Better still, the Switch NXii kit contains brass inserts for assembly. As such, no glueing or soldering is required. Currently, the kit can be purchased on Etsy without or with a Noctua fan for $95 and $110, respectively. Meanwhile, SetEngineering also offers a vertical stand for $15, all with a choice between nine primary and secondary colour options.
