GPD has released the Win 5 with some significant design changes over its predecessor. A couple of them were not received well by some fans, including the external battery, and a modder has just showcased a modded version of the gaming handheld that many might like.
To be specific, the modder, who goes by PureDIY, showcased two versions, and among them, one of the mods ditches the external battery design. Instead, it integrates a 45 Wh battery, which makes the gaming handheld a bit more portable but makes the chassis thicker than the original and reduces the battery run time.
This specific mod also adds a vent strip on the bottom and utilizes a non-OEM display, but keeps the dual-fan setup of the original. It also makes the controllers detachable, similar to what Lenovo offers with its Legion Go 2. Per PureDIY, with the internal battery and the controllers attached, the whole setup weighs around 917 grams.
As for the second version, it keeps the detachable controllers design but utilizes the same 85 Wh external battery as the original GPD Win 5. The obvious advantage of this modded design is that the device becomes more like a tablet when the controllers are detached, converting it into something similar to the OneXPlayer Super X but much smaller.
Speaking of the detachable controllers, they come with built-in batteries, making them work wirelessly even when detached (Xbox Elite Series 2 Core curr. $119 on Amazon). The modded versions have Joy-Con-style rails, allowing the Win 5 to charge the controllers when attached.
That said, while GPD appears to be officially showcasing the mods, none of them are available as a retail kit. Check out PureDIY's Bilibili video attached below to see the modded Win 5 versions in action.
