MSI restricts firmware updates for new QD-OLED gaming monitors to more expensive options with MAG 271QPX QD-OLED and MAG 321UPX QD-OLED excluded
MSI has now started selling a few of its new QD-OLED gaming monitor product stack that it showcased last month during CES 2024 in Las Vegas. So far, the company has released the MPG 321URX QD-OLED and MAG 341CQP QD-OLED, full details for which we have provided separately. However, it is also preparing two MAG and MPG monitors apiece, all with Samsung Display QD-OLED panels, as well as the MEG 321URX QD-OLED with built-in AI functionality.
Now, MSI has taken to the r/OLED_Gaming subreddit with a view to 'clarify any misconceptions and make sure everyone here is making an informed purchase'. While the company restated specifications for all but the MEG 321URX QD-OLED, which an MSI employee clarified they did not 'have any information' about for now. The same employee also confirmed that not all of the company's new QD-OLED gaming monitors will be eligible to receive future firmware updates.
Worse still, MSI elected against revealing which of these monitors would be ineligible for updates. Instead, the company described firmware updates as an 'MPG-Exclusive' feature, despite most of its latest MAG and MPG monitors sharing the same underlying QD-OLED panel. Thus, the MAG 271QPX QD-OLED and MAG 321UPX QD-OLED will only ever run launch firmware, even if these contain software bugs. By contrast, MSI will furnish the MPG 271QRX QD-OLED and MPG 321URX QD-OLED with updates, as is also the case for its other MPG QD-OLED monitors like the MPG 491CQP QD-OLED.
Confusingly, firmware updates will be headed the way of the MAG 341CQP QD-OLED, despite it too being an 'entry-level' option at €1,399, £1,299 and $949 in the EU, UK and US, respectively. For now, it remains to be seen whether MSI's decision to paywall firmware updates causes any issues. Nonetheless, it has drawn considerable ire in the ensuing Reddit threads, with more than one MAG 321UPX QD-OLED buyer claiming that they will be cancelling their orders as a result of MSI's decision-making.
