Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 in review: A long-lasting, silent Ryzen laptop ↺

The ThinkPad L series offers entry-level and mid-range business notebooks at a reasonable price. The least expensive models of this 15.6-inch notebook cost about $900. Lenovo sells versions with both AMD and Intel internals, and this model is AMD-based. The ThinkPad L14 Gen 4 is a 14-inch model that we just evaluated.
The Acer Aspire Vero AV15-53P, Schenker VIA 15 Pro M22, HP ProBook 445 G10, Fujitsu LifeBook E5412A, and Dell Latitude 3440 are among the competitors. This similarity applies more strongly to the last three laptops' respective 15.6-inch sister versions.

Case - The technology of the L15 is housed in a plastic casing
The case, characterized by its sober and functional design, is crafted from black plastic. More refined casing materials are reserved for the higher ThinkPad series. The iconic 'ThinkPad' lettering is prominently displayed on the back of the lid and the palm rest, both featuring smooth, matte surfaces. Notably, there is no maintenance flap; however, the battery (screwed, not glued) and other internals are accessible after removing the bottom shell. A positive feature is that the waste heat is dissipated on the right side of the notebook, ensuring sufficient cooling even when the lid is closed, for example, when docked.
The device exhibits no noticeable processing flaws, and the gap dimensions are correct. While the base unit can be twisted slightly too much, greater rigidity would be desirable. The lid remains within reasonable limits. Applying pressure to the back of the lid does not result in image changes, and the tight hinges securely hold the lid in position. The maximum opening angle is 180 degrees, and one-handed opening is possible.
Within the comparison field, the ThinkPad stands out as the heaviest notebook, weighing around 4.188 lbs. In terms of dimensions, the 15.6-inch devices in the test field do not share many similarities. The 14-inch competitors, of course, are much more compact and lighter.
Connectivity - The ThinkPad does not come with Thunderbolt
The notebook is equipped with two USB-A ports (USB 3.2 Gen 1) and two USB-C ports (USB 3.2 Gen 2). Notably, the USB-C ports support Power Delivery and DisplayPort functionality. In combination with the HDMI slot, the laptop boasts up to three video outputs. Additionally, it features a combined audio socket, Gigabit Ethernet, and an optional SmartCard reader to round off its connectivity options.
SD Card Reader
The microSD memory card reader, tested with the AV Pro SD microSD 128 GB V60 reference card, falls within the category of medium-fast models. It demonstrates transfer rates of 55.9 MB/s during the transfer of 250 JPG image files, each 5 MB in size, and achieves 88.9 MB/s when copying large data blocks.

Communication
Under optimal conditions—such as no WiFi devices in the immediate vicinity and a short distance between the laptop and the server PC—very good WiFi data rates are achieved. The L15 is equipped with a WiFi 6E chip (Mediatek MT7922). For wired connections, it features a controller (RTL8168/8111; 1 GBit/s) from Realtek.
In addition to WiFi, wireless connections can be established via the LTE network, thanks to the inclusion of a corresponding modem (Quectel EM05-G; CAT 4, max. 150 MBit/s download, 50 MBit/s upload). The SIM card reader (nano-SIM) is located on the back of the laptop, and eSIM is also supported
Webcam
In terms of quality, the webcam (2.1 MP + IR, max. 1,920 x 1,080 pixels) provides standard performance. However, a color deviation of approximately 12 (with the target being DeltaE < 3) is a bit higher than desired. On a positive note, the camera features a mechanical cover, enhancing privacy and security.

Security
The laptop offers access security through fingerprint recognition, Windows Hello, or SmartCard authentication. Additionally, it features a Trusted Platform Module (2.0) for enhanced security. For physical security, the device can be secured using a cable lock.
Accessories
Besides the standard documents (warranty information, quick start poster), no additional accessories are included with the TP.
Maintenance
After loosening the underneath screws, the base plate can be removed with a flat spatula. This provides access to various components, including the SSD (PCIe 4 SSD in PCIe 3 slot, M.2-2242), the WLAN module, the LTE modem, the memory banks, the battery, the speakers, the fan, and the BIOS battery.
Warranty
Lenovo grants the ThinkPad a one-year warranty within the US.
Input devices - The keyboard could use more stability
Keyboard
Lenovo equips the ThinkPad with a backlit (two-level) chiclet keyboard, which includes a number pad. The smooth, concave keys offer a short and clear stroke. While the key resistance is acceptable, some users might prefer a crisper feel. It's worth noting that the keyboard has a slight bounce when typing. One inconvenience is the swapped positions of the FN key and the left CTRL key, requiring users to adjust their practiced hand movements. Despite this, Lenovo delivers a very good keyboard overall, well-suited for everyday use.
Touchpad
A click pad, measuring approximately 4.52 x 2.20 inches, serves as the primary mouse replacement with a short stroke and a clear pressure point. The trackpoint, also available, allows for more precise control of the mouse pointer. The three smooth-running mouse buttons accompanying it provide a clear pressure point.
Display - FHD panel with low color space coverage
Lenovo equips the ThinkPad L15 G4 with a matte, viewing-angle-stable 15.6-inch display (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) in a 16:9 format. Notably, there is no PWM flickering, and the display boasts a fairly high contrast. The brightness falls slightly below the target (> 300 cd/m²). Alternatively, the ThinkPad is available with a slightly brighter FHD touchscreen. There are no other display options.

The display has an acceptable color representation out of the box; however, with a deviation of around 6.2, it falls short of the target (DeltaE < 3). Calibration brings the value down to 4.2, resulting in a more even display of the grayscale.
The panel is not capable of reproducing the AdobeRGB (43%), sRGB (63%), and DCI-P3 (42%) color spaces. Consequently, it may not be suitable for application scenarios that demand high color fidelity, as some competitors offer better performance in this regard.

Performance - Ryzen is on fire
Within the ThinkPad L15 G4 series, Lenovo offers models with APUs from AMD (Ryzen 7000) as well as CPUs from Intel (Raptor Lake). In this review, we focus on an AMD-based model. The AMD models available at the time of testing range in price from $900 to $1,300.
Testing Conditions
Rather than using its own energy profiles, Lenovo employs Windows profiles, referred to as energy statuses (see table). The provided performance levels vary depending on the selected status. For benchmarks and runtime load, the 'Best performance' profile was used, while the 'Balanced' profile was employed for other runtime tests.
Best performance | Balanced | Best energy saving | |
---|---|---|---|
Power Limit 1 (HWInfo) | 31 Watt | 25 Watt | 15 Watt |
Power Limit 2 (HWInfo) | 40 Watt | 30 Watt | 20 Watt |
Processor
The Ryzen 7 PRO 7730U APU, part of the Barcelo series and based on Zen 3 architecture, features eight CPU cores with a total of 16 threads, reaching a maximum clock rate of 4.55 GHz for a single core. Under continuous multi-thread load, as observed in the CB15 loop, the CPU maintains a consistently high Turbo clock.
While performance is influenced by the energy profile in use, differences between profiles are not substantial. The single-thread performance, which is more relevant for everyday use, consistently remains at a high level.
Benchmark results, when compared with the non-"PRO" variant Ryzen 7 7730U APU, indicate that the present APU values are at an average level under the 'Best performance' profile. The 'PRO' designation signifies support for AMD PRO technologies, encompassing a collection of security functions tailored for business use.

System Performance
The smoothly operating system is optimized for office and Internet applications, as well as frugal games at low settings. Some of the computing power remains untapped, as the RAM (16 GB, DDR4-3200) operates only in single-channel mode. Installing a second memory module would remedy this, activating dual-channel mode for enhanced performance.

DPC Latency
The standardized latency monitor test, encompassing web surfing, 4k video playback, and Prime95 High-Load, uncovered anomalies. The system does not seem well-suited for real-time video and audio editing. It's worth noting that future software updates could potentially bring improvements or even deteriorations to the performance.

Storage Devices
The system drive is a 512 GB SSD (PCIe 4, M.2-2242) from SK Hynix, delivering overall good data rates. Being installed in a PCIe 3 slot, it falls short of its full potential. A positive note is the absence of thermally induced throttling. It's important to highlight that only SSDs in the M.2-2242 format are compatible, excluding the more common M.2-2280 models. Unfortunately, the L15 does not provide space for additional SSDs.

Graphics card
The integrated Vega 8 iGPU is positioned in the mid-range of AMD's current lineup, featuring 512 shaders, DirectX 12 support, and a maximum clock rate of 2,000 MHz. Impressively, the latter can be maintained permanently, as demonstrated in the Witcher 3 test. The benchmark results are far below average due to the working memory running in single-channel mode. A significant performance boost could be achieved by installing a second memory module, activating dual-channel mode (see diagram).

Gaming Performance
While the computing power of the built-in APU meets the requirements of many undemanding games at low settings, it's essential to note that the ThinkPad is not designed as a gaming notebook. The relatively low frame rates observed can be attributed to the RAM operating in single-channel mode. Notably, significant performance improvements could be achieved by installing a second memory module, thereby activating dual-channel mode (see diagram).

Emissions - The L15 makes barely any noise
System Noise
The ThinkPad maintains a remarkably low noise level across its entire load range. The fan frequently remains stationary or operates at low speeds. Under the 'Best performance' energy profile, the maximum sound pressure level reaches 32.7 dB(A) under full load—a value that many notebooks do not even reach under low load.
A pity: an electronic spluttering noise can be heard from inside the casing when the SSD is heavily accessed.

Stress Test
The stress test, involving the continuous operation of Prime95 and Furmark, presents an extreme scenario for testing system stability under full load. At the beginning of the test, the CPU operates at clock rates of 3.4 to 3.6 GHz, gradually decreasing to 3 to 3.1 GHz as the test progresses. Simultaneously, the GPU clock rate experiences a drop from 2 GHz to 1.4 GHz after a short time and remains at this lower level.
Speakers
The stereo speakers produce decent sound, albeit with minimal bass.

The combination of the Ryzen 7 PRO 7730U and 16 GB RAM (single-channel mode) adeptly handles office, internet applications, and frugal games. We recommend installing a second memory module to fully unleash the APU's potential, particularly benefiting graphics performance.
Lenovo's presentation of the ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 (AMD) introduces a well-rounded mid-range business notebook with some minor weaknesses.
Its compact design, moderate weight (approximately 4.18 lbs), and excellent runtimes make the L15 a highly mobile laptop. The presence of two USB-C ports (USB 3.2 Gen 2) for power supply and seamless integration into existing workstation setups is a notable feature. Additionally, low emission values and the inclusion of an LTE modem contribute positively.
However, the built-in FHD screen (IPS, 15.6-inch) falls short in color space coverage, and the brightness remains below the target (> 300 cd/m²). Despite these drawbacks, the display boasts generous contrast and a matte surface. Criticism is directed towards the one-year warranty, which is expected to be more robust for a notebook in this price range.
As an alternative to the L15, the Acer Aspire Vero AV15 presents itself. It features a brighter, more colorful (sRGB) FHD display, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a QHD webcam. It does come with trade-offs, such as the absence of a Gigabit Ethernet slot and a memory card reader. Additionally, the RAM is onboard, meaning it cannot be replaced or expanded.
