There's a lot to like about the Lenovo LOQ on first glance. The feel of this laptop and the design doesn't scream basic - in fact some might be taken by that slightly more subtle design than some other gaming laptops. We also love the rear IO and the colour detail to the vents around the chassis - it looks great. We have high hopes for this laptop, but obviously haven't had the opportunity to test it to any degree. But with plentiful hardware options and a wide range of features on offer, the Lenovo LOQ could be a great choice for someone looking for a powerful PC that doesn't cost the earth.

It looks recognisably from the brand, and it behaves in a similar fashion when under stress. Its lasting power while not plugged in is left wanting. Which is fine, as it’s not the laptop’s primary purpose, but when you do find yourself in such a situation, you’ll feel the pressure to get your work done more while using it. On the flip side, if there is a reason that this laptop stars in its own brand new series of gaming laptops rather than joining the Legion line, it is probably not due to its lack of gaming prowess.

The Lenovo LOQ 15 is an above average affordable gaming laptop, particularly if you fork out for some of the available upgrades. Lenovo’s 165Hz 1440p display? Worth it, as the base display is undersaturated. The Nvidia RTX 4060 graphics card? Absolutely. And unlike some other brands' upgrades, these ones are sensibly priced. The keyboard is great, as is the overall look and feel of the Lenovo LOQ 15. It just doesn't seem as cheap and basic as much of the competition. There's just one part I wish was better - the tone of the fan noise. As long as you're happy with this, the mediocre touchpad and lack of ultra-fast connectivity, it's a really great option.

The new Acer Nitro 16 for instance with comparable specs (AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, RTX 4060) to the Lenovo LOQ 15 that we have here is priced at RM6,399. If we were to compare with what the Lenovo Malaysia website has on offer though, its RTX 4050-powered Lenovo LOQ 15 is still cheaper than the RTX 4050-powered Acer Nitro 16 that’s priced at RM5,799, though in both cases the Nitro 16 does have a taller 16-inch, 16:10 WQXGA display with the same 165Hz refresh rate.

Of course, this doesn’t take into consideration the temperatures and some features that are missing. In our opinion, the regular user won’t be interested in them. In terms of pure gaming experience, you don’t really need an SD card slot, nor a Thunderbolt 4 port. However, you might want a MUX switch, and the LOQ 15 delivers in this department. Lenovo LOQ (15″ Intel, 2023)’s IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a very good contrast ratio. Its backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment, which is great.

Especially since this combo of the latest Ryzen 7 7840HS and RTX 4060 processors — mixed with a smooth 144Hz G-SYNC ready display — is a great recipe for 1080p gaming. And seeing how most of the competition with a similar setup cost quite a bit more, the LOQ 15 stands out as a solid offering. Having said that, there are a few turnoffs here that may or may not matter to you. Like its cheap plastic build, that so-so display, and a few other things. But I think these mild turnoffs are something you can live with just fine, considering everything the LOQ 15 offers for the price.

But if you want to play games like Halo Infinite or others, you will either need a laptop with better specs or build a gaming PC desktop yourself, which may be the overall better choice than purchasing a gaming laptop. Despite not having premium aesthetics, I was pretty satisfied with the implementation as the laptop doesn’t look cheap and seems to justify the cost. Of course, it is bulkier than most modern gaming notebooks, and falls behind when it comes to battery life, which is something that most gaming laptops struggle with anyway. Other minor points of concern are the webcam and speakers, both of which are average. AMD Phoenix (Zen 4):
R7 7840HS: A powerful Phoenix family chip that saw the light of day in H1 2023. The processor features 8 cores (16 threads thanks to SMT support) running at 3.8 GHz. Not only does this APU has full might of the Zen 4 architecture at its disposal, it also comes with the new Ryzen AI technology that's set to make generative AI more ubiquitous than ever before. Last but not the least, the Radeon 780M serves as the integrated GPU.
R5 7640HS: An upper mid-range processor (APU) of the Phoenix product family. It was brought to life in H1 2023 and it has 6 SMT-enabled Zen 4 cores (12 threads) running at 4.3 GHz to 5.0 GHz. The laptop chip is one of the first to feature Ryzen AI, AMD's answer to Intel's DL Boost and GNA technologies. The Radeon 760M iGPU is responsible for carrying out 3D calculations and similar duties.

Intel Raptor Lake-HX:
