Lenovo IdeaPad S340 (i7-8565U, MX230) Laptop Review

Solid companion. In its current incarnation, the IdeaPad S340 presents itself with an attractive design and good hardware equipment. The optional dedicated MX graphics unit is a nice equipment feature that offers a bit more graphics performance. In this review, we evaluate how the Lenovo IdeaPad S340 with Nvidia GeForce MX230 turns out.
Lenovo IdeaPad S340-14IWL

The IdeaPad series includes Lenovo's jack-of-all-trades for everyday applications with an emphasis on office performance. Users have the choice of 17-inch IdeaPads, the slightly smaller 15-inch models or more compact notebooks with a 13-inch display. All these devices share a modest but attractive design and solid workmanship. This is also the case for our current test unit, the IdeaPad S340-14IWL.

Our test unit is equipped with an Intel Core i7-8565U and 8 GB of working memory. For the display of image contents, Lenovo uses an Nvidia GeForce MX230, and there is a 512 GB SSD to store data. At the same time, the competitors also offer affordable office companions with a similar price-performance ratio. In this test, we therefore compare the IdeaPad S340 with the Dell Latitude 14 5495, the Asus VivoBook 14, the HP ProBook 445 G6, and the Huawei MateBook D 14 W50F competitors. Below each of the comparison charts, you can also add notebooks from our database to the comparison.

Case - The IdeaPad S340 with a solid case

Lenovo uses a robust aluminum case for the IdeaPad S340. Only the display is framed by plastic inside the lid. The quality of the workmanship is very high and does not offer any reason for complaints. In addition, users can choose among various colors, and the small notebook is available in black, platinum-gray, blue, and rose colors. The display can be opened by 180 degrees, so you lay the display flat on the surface.

With its weight of 1.6 kg (~3.5 lb), the IdeaPad S340 is at a similar level as comparable notebooks. Since the competitors also use small bezels to a large extent, the dimensions also turn out to be similar. In the direct comparison, the Lenovo laptop presents itself even slightly more compact than most of the rest of the devices in our test field.

Input Devices - A small laptop with a good keyboard

Keyboard

While the keyboard of the IdeaPad S340 is well-suited to input longer text, it does not quite reach the quality of the Lenovo ThinkPads. The pressure point is only slightly noticeable and the feedback of the keys is a bit soft. On the other hand, the key size and arrangement are very good, enabling also those with larger fingers to type easily. Lenovo also offers the IdeaPad with an optional keyboard backlight, but our test unit did not include this.

Touchpad

As mouse replacement, users of the IdeaPad S340 are presented with a ClickPad. This offers a smooth surface that allows cursor navigation even with moist fingers. Pressing slightly harder on the left or right bottom corner will trigger the corresponding mouse click. The feedback is very crisp and the ClickPad responds with a clearly audible clicking sound to indicate the successful input.

Our measurements find an average contrast ratio of 897:1 and a good black value of 0.29 cd/m² for the display of the S340. This causes colors to appear not very well delimited, but black tones only show a minimal gray veil.

The CalMAN analysis also shows that in the state of delivery, colors are reproduced by the IdeaPad S340 with a slightly too high a blue and too low a red component. The DeltaE deviation is also relatively high. However, with a calibration, these deviations can be remedied almost completely. The corresponding ICC file can be downloaded from the link above in the little window on the right, next to the graphic of the brightness distribution.

Outdoors, the Lenovo IdeaPad S340 can be used easily in shady places. The non-reflective display also contributes to limiting reflections of the surrounding objects. In direct sunlight, however, the brightness is not sufficient to display the image contents to be easily readable.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White
27 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 16 ms rise
↘ 11 ms fall
The screen shows relatively slow response rates in our tests and may be too slow for gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 63 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (21.6 ms).
Response Time 50% Grey to 80% Grey
36 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 20 ms rise
↘ 16 ms fall
The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 44 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is similar to the average of all tested devices (33.9 ms).

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM not detected

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18110 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

The IPS panel of the IdeaPad S340 has very stable viewing angles. The display contents can be read from almost any angle, without being distorted or their colors being distorted. The Lenovo notebook can therefore also be used from unusual positions.

Performance - A good system performance in the IdeaPad S340-14IWL

With the IdeaPad S340, Lenovo targets buyers with a low to medium budget. Correspondingly, you can order the S340 with an Intel Core i3-8145U for users with low demands on the hardware, with an Intel Core i5-8265U for medium demands, and an Intel Core i7-8565U for slightly more demanding users. At this point, the working memory is limited to 8 GB, but the SSD/HDD equipment can be varied.

Processor

Our test unit of the Lenovo IdeaPad S340 is equipped with Intel's Core i7-8565U. This processor is based on the Whiskey Lake architecture and is well-suited for use in slim notebooks. With its four cores, the CPU is able to operate on up to 8 threads simultaneously, with the clock speeds ranging between 1.8 and 4.6 GHz. Due to Intel's Thermal Velocity Boost, higher clock speeds might even be possible, but the core temperature is then not allowed to rise above 50 °C (122 °F). How long the high clock speeds can be maintained depends mainly on the cooling system used.

In our Cinebench-R15 constant load test, the performance of the S340 varies considerably. However, compared to other notebooks with the i7-8565U, the result is on a high level and on average surpasses the performance of the Dell Latitude 14 5495 with an AMD Ryzen 7 2700U. In the single test, the Lenovo IdeaPad S340 is able to lead our test field in the multi-core performance. On the other hand, in the single-core performance other notebooks with the i7-8565U are slightly faster.

Noise characteristics

While idling and under low load, the fans of the Lenovo IdeaPad S340 remain silent. Under heavier load, they rev up with an even whir and become audible. However, even then the noise level of the fans remains low, making the IdeaPad S340 also suitable for use in more quiet surroundings. We did not notice any other noises such as coil whine or other electronic noises in our test unit.

Temperature

Stress test
Stress test

Our measurements attest the IdeaPad S340 with surface temperatures of up to 28.7 °C (~84 °F) during idle operation and up to 45.2 °C (~113 °F) under load. Particularly in the area in the back, the device feels very warm. However, it can still be used on your lap, for example, without any problems.

During the hour-long stress test, the temperatures inside the IdeaPad S340 increase up to more than 90 °C (194 °F) right after the start. The fans that start after a short time are able to stabilize the temperatures below the 70-degree mark (158 °F) fairly quickly. This temperature can be maintained until the end of the test. However, the clock speeds drop significantly below the basic clock speeds and only slightly stabilize towards the end of the test. Since a load such as in our stress test scenario is almost impossible in practice, users do not need to worry about performance drops when using the IdeaPad S340.

Speakers

The speakers of the IdeaPad S340 produce a relatively low volume with a sound spectrum that emphasizes the mids. Very high and very low tones drop sharply. While the speakers are still suited for the occasional reproduction of audio content in quiet surroundings, we recommend external speakers or headphones. These can be connected via a 3.5-mm audio combo port to the Lenovo notebook, which fits in tightly and does not impact the sound quality negatively.

Battery Life

In our realistic WLAN test, the Lenovo IdeaPad S340 achieves a runtime of six hours. With this, the 14-inch notebook only achieves a value that remains below our expectations for the 52.5 Wh battery. Comparable notebooks, even those with a dedicated graphics unit, achieve longer runtimes, although some of them even have a lower capacity. Lenovo also offers the IdeaPad S340 with a smaller 36 Wh battery.

Pros

+ solid case
+ good system performance
+ empty SATA slot
+ no PWM

Cons

- working memory cannot be replaced or expanded
- mediocre battery life

Verdict - A solid companion with a mediocre battery life

Testing: Lenovo IdeaPad S340. Test unit provided by Lenovo Germany
Testing: Lenovo IdeaPad S340. Test unit provided by Lenovo Germany

In our test, the Lenovo IdeaPad S340 presents itself as a solid companion, whose robust case and modest design will fit into any business surroundings. The system performance is very good, and users can increase their storage space not only by replacing the SSD but also add a SATA drive. However, the fact that the working memory cannot be expanded or replaced gives a significant reason for complaint.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S340 is a solid companion with a good system performance. However, the battery life remains below our expectations.

The display is more than sufficient for most tasks and is also suited for users with sensitive eyes, since it does not use PWM. The good input devices make using the IdeaPad a pleasant task. On the other hand, at only six hours, the battery life turns out quite short for a slim and light device. Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad S340 is a good companion for everyday work, if you can always find an outlet nearby.
