With the massive success of Marvel Rivals, some fans expect DC Studios to follow the same formula. James Gunn gave those gamers hope when speaking recently at an event. ComicBook.com asked Gunn about a potential hero shooter DC game, and he responded enthusiastically. No project is currently in the works, but the DC Studios head would listen to proposals from game developers.
As tempting as the idea may be, it's questionable whether a DC Studios shooter would be as successful. In many ways, Marvel was the perfect source of characters for an Overwatch-style game. The Marvel Rivals roster is diverse, with personalities already interacting in the popular Avengers film series. On the other hand, most profitable DC movies have focused on developing distinct characters, like Batman, Superman, and Aquaman.
The Batman: Arkham trilogy includes the most widely praised DC games. However, it's a single-player experience with a compelling narrative about one superhero. When Warner Bros. Games released Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in 2024 with co-op, gamers panned its live-service elements. Not surprisingly, Rocksteady Games is creating a new Batman game that's focused on single-player gameplay.
There are multiplayer DC games with ensemble casts that have had some success. DC Universe Online is an obvious example, a 2011 MMORPG that is still playable today. Yet, gamers haven't always had positive reactions when discussions about a Marvel Rivals DC clone have come up. Some players would prefer a game with an original concept rather than a copy of a hero shooter inspired by Overwatch.
Gotham City Impostors was a multiplayer shooter that debuted in 2012 and received mediocre reviews. One of the most common criticisms was that the game was a poor Call of Duty imitation. If James Gunn endorses the same approach with Marvel Rivals, the game may face similar criticisms.
