Reviews for the HP ZBook 8 G1i 14, RTX 500
Compact but powerful, the HP ZBook 8 G1i pairs a professional Nvidia GPU with a hefty 64 GB of RAM. We tested how much performance this small workstation can really deliver.

The HP ZBook 8 G1i isn't a terrible laptop, but for mobile workstation pricing, I expect more than hardware that's two years old at this point in the RTX 500 Ada generation dGPU. 4GB of VRAM is enough for CAD or photo editing use, but for video editors, data scientists, or anyone else who needs a mobile workstation, it's nowhere near the mark. At the current price of $5,755, there are better options, like the Lenovo ThinkPad P1, or HP's bigger brothers, the ZBook X G1i or G1a. And if you're not wedded to Windows-only software, a MacBook Pro will be more performant at around the same price. Again, this isn't a bad laptop, just a bad value.

The HP ZBook 8 G1i knows exactly what it is: A portable workstation for professionals complete with high-end CPU performance, a long warranty, workstation-class Nvidia graphics, a generous amount of RAM, and a big SSD. And HP knows exactly how to price it: While $5,755 seemed extreme, the fact that the machine was already 61 percent off when I finished reviewing it shows how ready HP will be to cut the price to something reasonable. If you’re looking for a fast professional workstation, the HP ZBook 8 G1i fits the bill. Just don’t pay $5,755 for it.

NVIDIA RTX 500 Ada Generation Laptop: A lower-end professional graphics card for use in laptops that sports 2,048 CUDA cores and 4 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. It appears the RTX 500 is a heavily cut-down GeForce RTX 4050 (Laptop); therefore, we believe the former is powered by the same AD107 chip as the latter. The product was brought into existence in February 2024. It leverages TSMC's 5 nm process and the Ada Lovelace architecture and its gaming performance is sufficient for 2023/2024 games at 1080p on high graphics settings.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
