Google has confirmed in a support document that the rollout of Wear OS 6 for the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 has just begun. As usual, the rollout will take place in several waves, and it will take until the end of October for all users of both models to have access to the new software. The first-generation Pixel Watch will receive the update at a later date.
To manually initiate the update, tap the smartwatch icon several times in the settings under System → About. The update can only be installed if the smartwatch is at least 50% charged and connected to a charger. The Pixel Watch 4 was already shipped with Wear OS 6, and now older models are finally getting the "Material 3 Expressive" design updates.
Following the update, the system's accent color can be customized more extensively, while Google has redesigned the shape of many buttons and UI elements, giving the user interface a more modern look. In addition to a rounder font, the update also introduces new scroll bars and new tile layouts. Furthermore, Wear OS 6 also brings practical improvements beyond the design changes, starting with optimizations that are said to increase battery life by up to 10%.
Wear OS 6 allows Google Maps to open automatically and take over navigation from your smartphone when using navigation for pedestrians or cyclists. Google also highlights some performance improvements, particularly in terms of navigating the operating system and the display of incoming notifications.
