Google has made a surprise announcement as Pixel and iPhone users can now share files seamlessly using AirDrop and Quick Share. This means users will not have to rely on third party apps or Bluetooth file transfers. It not only makes the experience simpler but also more secure. And, it works both ways without having to install any additional software.
As per the blog post, Google is allowing Quick Share to work with AirDrop. Till now, Quick Share has been Android’s way of seamlessly sharing files between two Android devices, just like AirDrop has been an exclusive feature for iPhone, iPad, and MacBook owners. Now, with the collaboration, Pixel 10 series owners will be able to use Quick Share and send files to Apple device users with AirDrop.
As shown in the animation, the Quick Share menu will be able to find iPhones that have AirDrop turned on when nearby with visibility set to 'Everyone for 10 minutes', and then easily send files across. Similarly, iPhone owners, or any Apple device with AirDrop, can use the AirDrop menu to share files with Pixel 10 devices nearby. Google says the feature is starting to roll out for Pixel 10 series today (November 20) and the company is working to expand to other Android devices.
Google says cross-platform sharing has privacy and security safeguards built-in as part of the “secure by design” approach. This is a multi-layered security approach that includes a secure sharing channel, built-in platform protections native to Android and iOS, and approval systems.
