Garmin has expanded its electrocardiogram (ECG) app to users in two more countries. The feature was released in 2023, though it was initially only available to users in a few regions like the US, Singapore and Hong Kong. Then, earlier this year, it began to roll out to smartwatch users in Australia and the EU.
Now, the ECG app is also available in the UK and Switzerland. This means that there are around 50 regions in which this tool is now available. Compatible smartwatches include the Fenix 7 Pro, the Fenix 8 and the Tactix 8 (51mm Solar version curr. $1,399.99 at Amazon); a complete list can be found below. It is worth noting that the ECG app is only available to Venu 2 Plus users in the original smaller list of countries and is therefore not offered in Europe.
The Garmin ECG app uses the compatible smartwatch’s sensors to record your heartbeat. The reading takes around 30 seconds, and results are immediately viewable on the watch or in the Garmin Connect app. In addition to tracking your heart rate, the feature can detect an irregular heart rhythm, which could be a sign of atrial fibrillation (AFib).
However, this is not a medically certified device, so users should seek advice from a doctor if they have any concerns. Results are exportable to a PDF, making them easy to share. Whether or when Garmin could bring a passive AFib detection tool to its smartwatches remains to be seen.
