Garmin has announced that its electrocardiogram (ECG) app is about to roll out to smartwatch users in more countries. The feature arrived in 2023 for customers in countries including the US, Singapore and Hong Kong. Now, the tool is offered to users in Australia and the EU thanks to recent approval by the relevant authorities in these two regions.
The ECG app enables users to check their heart rhythm and can detect signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib). Sensors built into the watch record electrical signals linked to your heartbeat. Users can manually trigger the 30-second test directly on the watch, with the result viewable immediately afterwards. Plus, you can choose to store the data in the Garmin Connect app, so you have a log of historical results.
Garmin notes that if your watch flags possible signs of AFib, you should seek advice from a medical professional. The ECG app is compatible with various models like the Fenix 8, Fenix 7 and Enduro 3 (curr. $851.41 at Amazon); a full list of eligible models can be found below. Garmin has yet to announce when the ECG app will reach these smartwatches. It is expected to roll out in upcoming firmware updates for the wearables, accompanied by an update for the Garmin Connect mobile app.
